I'm maybe two miles from Greg's place if you need a ride. The Pacific Surflner trains are actually pretty nice, no traffic hassle and they have beer (Arrogant Bastard even!) at the snack bar! I've found going to/from downtown by train much easier and faster most of the time. Yeah yeah, I'm strange, I've actually used public transportation here.

If you need a great 928 mechanic, you won't find anyone better than Markus; if you want a good business man, or a mechanic with good business practices, Markus is probably not your man. He is incredibly knowledgeable about 928's and their picadillo's; his work product is excellent, fair and he is honest and direct (remember, I didn't say "quick") - but his business practices were always suspect - just an example of how one should stick to what one is good at...anyway, he has been out of commission for some time due to his various medical issues but in a "perfect" world, I would never let anyone other than Markus touch my 4 928's (and, if he is available, I still hold to this)...but it is important to find a mechanic who is not just knowledgeable, but whom you trust. I've heard great things about Van Nuys and Anaheim, but I've also heard they are expensive and, again, quick turn around seems to be a constant issue. If you want to see the product of Markus' work, come out to Willow Springs on the 17th (June 17 with Open Track Racing) where I'll have my street legal track car. Hopefully, in the near future, Markus will get better and have his dedicated (non-street legal) track car out as well.

I never got the impression that either Jules or Greg is 'expensive'. I guess I consider the 'value' stick, where I can pay less and get perhaps a lesser service from someone who is still apprenticing on the 928. The supply of seriously knowledgeable 928 wrenches is dwindling, so it's getting tougher to find someone you trust with the car. I have it narrowed down to Jules and Greg. I should also state for the record that neither has ever worked on my car for me, although Jules did a quick MAF-ectomy on mine to prove a failed MAF on Larry's car a couple years ago. But I've spent a few minutes with each and recognize their abilities.

So far, patience and a big hammer have been enough to allow me to keep the car running and stopping when I ask it to. The big hammer is available if anybody in the area needs it, BTW. Can't loan out patience though-- folks take too long getting it back to me.

My car has the numer "41" on the side; I won't be hard to spot - I'll be the only 928 out there...(unless you drive your 928 out, of course....) - very rarely (and I mean very, very, rarely) another 928 shows up (there's a few older brown
928's that have made their presence known at the track) and I believe I saw Mark Anderson at the track once or twice over the past 5 years or so fooling around...) - weather should be fantastic. I usually park at the end of the 4 garages if I can get there early enough. Hope to see you out there (If I remember correctly, don't you own one of the brown 928's I've seen at the track on occasion?)

Yeah, not like there's a plethora of 928's at the track. Sadly I won't be out there for this one, hopefully I can get a day in next month though.

Here's Les's car at Willow Springs a few months ago.

Just a follow up on Markus and the "buyer beware" comment; there is a certain person known among the 928 group who is affiliated with customizing 928's, particularly interiors - he doesn't do any of the work but is somehow related to the shops that do. I have spoken with many people who have dealt with him, particularly in selling him parts, who speak well of him and have experienced no issues; however, he is wanted on arrest warrants in a dozen states, has more than a dozen judgments against him in more than a dozen states, has used numerous alias' here in California and in more than a dozen states....get the picture? I supposed one has to base one's opinion on their own experiences; if you have had a bad experience mechanically with Markus' work, I would be surprised - but if you had a bad "business experience" with Markus, join the crowd. His shop in Santa Monica was notoriously slow (it could take months to get your 928 back) and I understand the frustration when you would go to the shop and see your baby just sitting outside not being worked on weeks after you dropped it off...I "cured" that problem by committing the entire day and staying at the shop making sure the work was done right then and there and knowing why it wasn't (if, for example, a part needed to be ordered, or was back-ordered...) - with Markus, you definitely need to be pro-active and with Jules you don't (or with the shop in
Anaheim)...but I have never seen anyone better at diagnosing 928 issues; fixing complicated or complex 928 issues or who cares more about 928 automobiles than Markus. I cannot say that all my experiences with him have been perfect and I have known him a long time (since I bought my first (of now 4) 928's - on balance, I would never hesitate to take my car to him if I had an issue with it, or it needed repairs - but I would never just leave my car with him - even today - enough said on that subject. You go with what you know and with what and how you have experienced - the important issue is to find someone you trust to do the work you don't feel you can do on your own. Making a mistake working on a 928 can be very expensive (heck, just getting anything fixed on a 928 can be very expensive)...

Thanks for posting the picture of my car (#41) also known as the "Fresno car" - why didn't you post the picture with you in the passenger seat? (just kidding...) mid-week track days are not my norm, but I had the day open so....there are some weekend Speedventure events coming up, so maybe we'll meet up at the track on one of those? Keep me posted.

Oranges and apples:confused

I have known Markus for several years, and he has never worked on my car. However, he has worked on a couple of friends cars, and they were very satisified with the results.

I believe I know who the mystery person is with the alias, arrest warrants and judgements; which I believe has no affiliation with Markus. Why would you lump both of them in the same post
