My view on audio, and especially car audio, isn't mainstream. Cars are both great and terrible environments to listen to music in. Great because the size is so small its easy to get high sound levels, terrible due to the lousy speaker locations, all the glass, road noise, and geometry.
For this car I would not want to do anything with the stereo that detracted from the interior. That means nothing big in the doors, and a small hidden subwoofer. Something like the Speakerworks waveguides might be a way to keep all but a tweeter out of the doors, but careful selection of sub woofer and its crossover point making a true 3 way could work very well.

*** note the Speakerworks guys are friends of mine, which means I like them personally, but don't always agree with them technically.

Dangler,
Nice throw-back post. HLCD used to be the "bomb" (period correct parlance) before and significant advancements were made in DSP and time alignment. I still have several sets in my collection. However, this doesnt solve Dan's specific problem as we dont have any issue with door tweeters, there just arent many door friendly woofers that will fit. I am still looking, just not found anything stellar that doesnt require removing sheet metal, or adding a fiberglass enclosure.

What I am saying is I see no need for reproducing anything below 150hz from the door, so no need for larger than maybe 5", and no need for much excursion in the door.
I'm a believer in audiophile in the house, loud and clean, but ok if its a bit sloppy in the car.

Posterity data point: Naked sunroofless '90-95 roof panel = 16 lbs 8.3 oz.
928 503 501 02 is '78-89, 928 503 501 03 is 90-95. Antenna hole is the difference (?)

BTW..forgot about this..but don't have any good pics of how it was mounted behind the door panel.
I do recall Thurston had to grind away some of the door metal for the magnet, but it wasn't much and the door panel looks 100% stock from the outside.

Thanks Tom. Were you able to mount the 6.5 speaker in the lower door without modification? Do you have any pics?
I worry a lot about building out the lower door panel to hold a deep speaker. Concerned about continuously dragging my foot across it getting in/out of the car. Well, not so much me but passengers.

89 also has the roof antenna... so that's abit odd that they would spec 78-89?..

Some progress to report and show.
A few weeks ago Paul Champagne and I discussed a shift in the design approach for my car. Instead of going with the mostly Linen and Turquoise Metallic interior scheme, which was beautiful but in reality not practical, I have opted for a more reasonable black with turquoise highlights. Included with this will be Pascha laser etched components. I think for the way I plan on driving and enjoying this car with my family the black interior will wear and look best.
Additionally, Greg Brown will begin finishing up the stroker build. It will come with all the latest performance and engine sparing accouterments (coated SS headers and full exhaust and the new oiling solution)
The interior of the car has been mostly stripped clean by Collins Auto Trim in Downey, CA. Tom Scott and his team are installing Dynamat and Dynaliner to all appropriate surfaces as I type.
Once the interior is installed the car will be brought back to Rob Edwards house for some final assembly of misc. components. The car will then be delivered back to Greg Brown's shop for the install of the stroker and initial run in. After that the car will be returned to Ron Ruff for the final paint, buff and reassembly of the body panels. The rest of the interior will be installed and final break-in and shake down will occur.
I want to point out that Rob Edwards has been graciously donating significant amounts of his personal time and efforts towards to evolution of this project. I cannot adequately express my gratitude in any meaningful way except to say thank you, thank you, thank you.
Additionally, lots of extended efforts have been put forth by Paul and the lovely and ever kind Linda. Even the shipping crate he has assembled is at a level above anything else.
This 928 will be a one of a kind example representing the very best of talents, technologies and friendships. It is great to see tangible progress. I almost feel obliged to put sponsorship stickers on the car representing all the people and their services that are going into the project.

Sigh... When I see this, I look at my own project and think: what's the point
.
Fantastic work.
So what happened to the linen and turquoise interior that Paul was working on? Not scrapped I hope.

How do I update the title of this thread? I know how to update a post title but not the master thread title. I did it before but can't seem to figure out how to do it now.
