Yes, the short shifter is great. There is a thread here on rennlist that shows how you can make one easily at home, with the additional hole spacing and all. Lizard was the one showing how to do it.

My S4 had a shortened stock shifter and I switched to the short shifter. The shorter throw is nice and it takes the guesswork out of finding the gears. The shifting is very direct as compared to the stock shifter. It would be nice if the short shift was smoother (not as notchy) but I'm probably one of the few that would appreciate that.
