Tom-
I have no doubt that Tom was nothing but forthright about the car, and he clearly did an outstanding job of maintaining it cosmetically. There's a big stack of receipts organized by year- reminds me of me..... I even talked to the guy at his shop who knew the car and no one relayed anything that sounded potentially catastrophic.
RE: the autopsy, dunno yet. I need to get the motor back into my GT at home so it's mobile (hoping to do that this upcoming weekend) and then I can bring the GTS home, get it into my side of the garage and pull that motor. We may put it up on the lift at Mark's to get a preliminary look-see. Interesting thought about oil and detonation- When I was at Jim M's, we put the Theo diagnostic tool on it- Bill B saw two knock sensor faults that he cleared. Not sure if they came back or not. It was the first time all day the motor saw 4000 rpm, so I suppose it's possible. I had shipped a 6-pack of ventil sauber to Tom's and was on can #4 when it blew. Will be interesting to see how much crud there is on the pistons. .

WOW
I cant believe it Rob, this is exactly what you thought could happen and I thought you were being way to pessimistic on the phone about it. I thought there was no way! 900 mile trip you will be fine, great drive, no worries and not only did it leave you stranded but you likely have a useless block now.
Im so sorry!
As for the right thing to do. DONT SECOND GUESS YOURSELF! Had i known Tom's number was $22,000 and not $26,000 I would have gotten it together to buy the car. I didnt know, you did, you made the right decision. Honestly, your still in cheap money for what looks like a GREAT GTS. Hey, its not Cobalt, but its damn close! And as i told you, if i bought that car or any 93, i would have rebuilt the think REGARDLESS. It just sucks you cant really rebuild from the looks of it...
All in all you were going to transplant the motor anyway, i am annoyed that you now have no core to resell or keep that really sucks and im sorry that doesnt work out.
As for the other car, lets get the GT back running. I am free this weekend, Saturday and Sunday and would love to come by and help get the engine back in the car so you have at least one hot German to play with till the big sister is ready post engine transplant. Let me know i will be free and would love to help get the GT going.
I still cant believe your worst case scenario happened..... that sucks!

Wow Rob, that is some rotten luck. Congrats, however, on that beautiful, uniquely painted, no-rub-strip, 5 speed GTS. Looking forward to seeing it on the road with a wicked stroker in it.

Rob - I'm with Ryan, had I known the price would go that low, it'd be setting in my driveway right now. I think when it was on e-bay, it was $25~ and he said it needed a new OPG and the A/C wasn't working. The OPG made me wonder about the last time the rod-bearings were checked... Did it throw a rod or was it possibly just a blown crank seal? It's great you have a spare engine--good luck!!

A series of unfortunate events... Hey, that'd make a great book/movie title! Oh yeah... there already is.
Rob-
Sorry to hear about it. You're taking it quite well. And I believe you were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. It will be interesting to see if any of the post mortem would have been picked up in a PPI. But then, you'll be looking backward beating yourself up even more. You need to look forward.
Get a new motor, slap it in, and have fun.
BTW, that car does look gorgeous! Righteous buy! If I were'nt unemployed, I would have considered that car - And then I'd be telling my tale of woe from somewhere in Wyoming. So... Thank you for buying this.

Thats a nice car you got, i wonder if pulling the dipstick and dripping the oil onto a black piece of cardboard would have shown any metal prior to your drive??
Good luck with the new engine

Wow Rob, congrats on the purchase! Stunning color combo (my favorite for a GTS) and in very nice condition.
Not exactly the best initial ownership experience but hopefully a solution materializes quickly/cost effectively and you have the car on the road.
How many miles on the GTS?

Great find regardless, Rob. Beautiful car and great color. Sounds like you have a great engine replacement, too.
AAA might be a good thing to have for SITM...could be money well spent.
Oh, and hey, if you ever want to sell those Cup wheels, please keep me in mind.

Rob - Ughhhhh! I like many others I looked at and into buying that very same car. For me the initial high asking price was an issue. At $22k I would have been all over it.
Fate is a strange and fickle thing and unlike Kharma it has little to do with the good you have done already. Sometimes things like this happen for a greater benefit that is impossible to know at the moment.
It is strange these 928's we own..... the reality is though we pay money for them, receive and hold title of them, we never truly own them. No, we are but the present caretakers of them.
Again sorry to hear of the unfortunate beginning here with this car.
