My first thought would not be how common or how rare, but how stolen.

That's a replacement block supplied from the factory. I have one. (Hi, Colin!) It comes with the cylinders bored but they don't know in advance which heads and pistons are being put in it, so no model number is stamped.

seems pretty easy to just grind it off that portion of the block.

I had thought about doing this if i was going to put an early squirter block into something like a GTS. I wouldnt want those earlier M28/42 numbers on the GTS but not sure i would actually ever do it.

It's studded so I am assuming it's an 85-86..

The motor that Glen has which is referanced to was obviously not ground down in that area.

Factory replacement blocks are usually marked with ATR stamping. If engine was complete there is engine number but if it was just bare block then there might not be any stamping at all or just engine type.

Mine has no stamping, was replaced at about 56K miles thru/at a dealer. Was noted in service manual as "valve job" HAHA!!

Please a word to the wise. Do not EVER alter a vin or engine number. This can get you in all sorts of trouble. No I don't speak from experience but I have a customer who stamped his old engine number into a block that was blank and it was not good.
