Default Identifying a LSD without disassembly?

I was told my 86.5 has a LSD... I have not torn into the rear end yet. The car does not have its options list in the trunk. I've been meaning to ask this for some time, but it always seems to SLIP my mind...

Questions...

Is there a way to identify a LSD without visual inspection? Can a LSD be identified with both rear wheels off the ground? Can a LSD be identified by the handling characteristics of the car?

Turn the rear wheel. If the opposite wheel turns in the same direction, you have LSD. If it turns in the oposite direction, its not LSD.

This is what greeted me the first time I had my '86.5 on the lift.

Cool news. Thanks! Since I have the front jacked up pulling the engine, It probably won't be until next week before I can check by rotating the wheels...maybe I can see the transmission... Sperrdiff means LSD?

If it was a 5 spd you could do a burnout and look behind to see.

If the transaxle hasn't been opened and midified internally since it left the factory, you can also tell from the serial number of the transmission. Its found on the bottom edge at the rear, facing the ground.

LSD has a 2 instead of a 1 in about the 5th digit (from memory - I'll go check in a min)

Edit: nevermind - seems that was a change only introduced in the S4-onwards years

What does it do in drive or reverse?

(This is hardly a trick question... )

If it's a 5 speed, it gives you a hernia.
