Default Coolant hose chafing on PS pulley ('84 S)

Hi!

I have a problem with my lower coolant hose chafing on the PS pulley axle/nut. (see attached picture)
Anyone see what the problem is?
Is it an aftermarket hose that just fits badly? Everything else seems to be aligned up correctly, so I don't see why it should chafe...
I am in the process of putting together an order for more 928 parts (again..), and wonder if I should put a new (OEM) hose on the list, or if I should just cut an inch off the lower end to pull it away from the pulley.
Any thoughts?

-E

When I replace that hose I generally just cut the lower end of the hose down to pull it forward. On the early cars it's the belt that cuts into the hose, not the pulley but this should work for you.

Is it the correct hose? I know there is a difference between the OB and S4 because to install the Murph Supercharger kit one thing we do is use an OB coolant hose...
Maybe you have the S4 version.

The hose should be tightly held to the rad fan bracket..............at least it is on the S4. There's a molded provision for doing so.

The '84 MY is perhaps different with the single fan; I'd look pulling the hose away from the pulley with tye wraps.

From your pic I'd also consider replacing the pwr strg hoses before its to late..............fire!

My hose started to get close to the pulley nut like that but I just attributed it the hose being older and softening. Replaced with a new one and there's plenty of room now.

and another thing to check is the bottom of the radiator.
There is a rubber bumper that fits into the bottom of the side tank is it possible that it isnt seated correctly?? This would make the whole rad be moved rearwards

My 83 has a part molded on the fan shroud to allow the hose to be cable tied to it, for exactly this reason. Your hose seems to have a join in the middle (clamps visible in the pic), which are not on mine...

Right. Shouldn't the hose by one continuous piece. Looks cobbled-up to me.

The old hose cut by the belt or pulley trick!

I have been there before! what you need to do is just tie it off a little differently to that attachement point on the ratidator fan shroud. otherwise, shorting the hoses might work, or putting them on further.

Looks to me like he put a sleeve on it to take the brunt of the pulley-grinding.

Exactly.. It is a piece of an old hose zip tied to the hose to protect it, and the hose is also zip tied to the plastic bracket.

Thanks for all the tips. At least I know that others have had the same problem.
I might try to cut the lower end a bit and see if that helps.

I have an 84 US in the basement, do you want a picture for reference?

I see now.

Maybe shortening, or maybe putting a different twist into the hose?

I have one zip tie holding it against the shroud "rest" for the hose. Are the shroud upper/lower properly mating? Could the drive belt be different than stock-length? Just some ideas. There is not a lot of room there anyway, so an "overhose" would likely hit the pulley if installed on mine. Perhaps remove the overhose and put a little more twist in the hose.
