Okay everyone knows about the popularity of "lemons" racing....the $500 cars derby.....I found an interesting 1983 S automatic (not running) that might make a good lemons racer.....since I think I can get the car for about $200.... I've discussed the project with some other local Norcal 928ers...& there is "some" interest...but there still is SIGNIFICANT hurdles to get a project like this running....
1: A place to work on the 928
2: Time & people to work on the 928
3: $$$$$ to work on the 928
Plus time to remove and sell off old parts, to help keep the official cost under $500...which is plausible.....
I think a team of at least 5-6 serious members will work..... I am interested in a lemons racer...BUT do not have the time to spearhead the project....I can contribute labor-$$$$- and some loaner safety equipment out of the widow...I know I can get a rollcage for a significant discount & "might" be able to arrange a shop in West Sacramento to work on it (only on weekends).....but having the car in somebody's garage or personal shop is ideal.....
the major hurdle will be to get the 928 running reliably enough to "race" & pass safety inspection (cage-etc)....
for what its worth...I am 100% sure we WILL get in (a challenge now) and very likely could end up with a little bit of media coverage (hopefully)....assuming we get a killer team name...or maybe make some airdam "fins" for our land shark....or paint some teeth?
Hmm a "rennlist" sponsorship? Or another vendor maybe would help immensely.....
So who is interested?

Man I wish I had the time, money and space to do this, but it's tough just to get my car
ready for this ORR season. It sounds like a lot of fun though.

FWIW, I tried to launch a "lemons" team a couple of years ago using an existing race car, a retired but currently owned SCCA ITB car. I had four drivers "on board", all with SCCA or better racing experience, two of us actually raced this same ITB car many years ago.
Our challenge and failure was all the needed car prep given that there was a huge difference in our wrenching abilities. IMHO, the challenge for this specific event is how to fairly split up the likely / unlikely seat time (possible voting out) vs. peoples contribution to car prep, both $$$ and hours.
From past experience with other enduros, I have found that the best method to establish "fair" is to get things established in writing far in advance of race day. Do not play games with how things /efforts get valued.
I mention all this stuff as you have the added challenge of bringing a 928 back to life. Add that to this effort, 928 lemons racer or not, the effort may take talent beyond the typical DIY-er and if such folks contribute their efforts, think about how to be fair to them vs. the parts cleaner grade worker / contributor.
Being fair to folks' value is really import for "lemons" because, as I know you know, the way the "lemons" rules work, their are many ways to hide value of contributions, i.e. roll cage / safety mods,. This adds to the problem and can really slant values if you are not very, very careful. - $0.02
Good luck with your venture. I hope you find the folks and resources you need and make it all happen.

It sounds great.
The east coast leMons car is still in the back field waiting for me to finish the motor and stripping the interior out. Now that DR and Jeannie donated the heads the pace shall be picking back up. I have my own cars to work on too..
Right now the newly acquired '85 Euro jumped in line for a quick timing belt tension check.... Dude, how can you drive a car this dirty - yuck....
Hey - WYAI
Might as well clean this engine bay a bit....
What started as checking the belt tension turned into removing the spider for powder coat, cleaning 20 years of grunge out of the valley...
Did we say - Powder coat - allright!
It shouldn't take to long to set up a separate area for cleaning all of this.
Darn it... I need a blast cabinet... off to Harbor Freight ....
This one will fit in the car...
"We have to load that?"... "Don't worry, it'll fit"
Shiat - not in the trunk... let's take it out of the box...
Smack the unwrapped cabinet into the side of the NEW car... oooops...
Finally found a place for it...
"Quite your whinning Biatch... the back seat isn't that small... it's only a two hour drive".
It took another day to add lights, plumb the air, etc....
FINALLY...
Off comes the hood - Hey WYAI...that blower fan needs replacing.....
Might as well install the dual exhaust, that won't have me in tight quarters again so my hand can heal.... hmmmmm - lets paint that too!
Shoot - I need to drive this car to work on Saturday...
That ain't gonna happen...
Let me take an hour to replace the cold start solenoid on the other Euro....
Darn it - Linen doesn't stay clean when you have dirty hands... I'm just going to take a quick shower and clean this leather a bit...
A few hours later... Now what was I doing...
Oh Yeah... Might as well change the color on the intake for the 86.5 too....
Whew - some things never change...
Trick #1
Make sure the car ends up somewhere that OTHER peep's can work on it when they have the available time. Not where they need to plan and make hour long drives to invest a few minutes.....

It appears in order to have a successful lemons effort you need a core group of highly motivated people that have the time and experience necessary to accomplish the goals of getting a "race worthy-ish" vehicle ready to go..... I have no doubts that there is the right amount of experience on this board to do it...the problem is time and location of the vehicle being worked on....since the vast majority of local 928ers already have a time and $$$ consuming project in THEIR 928's.... not to mention jobs and family....
hence the dilemma.... I'm in the same boat....just about all of my spare time-$$$ is spent driving or upgrading the widow..... As much as I think this "could" be a fun project for the local guys...it could quickly turn into a nightmare and ruin friendships too....which I don't want to happen...

Brian:
We talked about this yesterday of the phone. You seem to realize that it's just not in the cards right now and may never be because everyone is pretty well comitted to other projects, including you, as you note above. The $200 car down the street may be a great opportunity for someone to do this. It's just not going to be any of us.

Well Brian, I'm still parking six cars in my two car garage, so I can't offer any space, but if the car were in the Stockton area I'd be glad to contribute time and tools.

Good to know......I'm still working on the car...thats priority #1..... I figure for the silly low price for an 84 is worth it just for spare body parts in case the widow needs them....but a lemons 928 would sure be cool too!!
