I can't call myself a "928 Old Timer". I bought my first Porsches in 1998, and my first 928 in January 2000. I still have it and it serves me very well. Since those days I have owned and loved many Porsches but I've kept my Godzilla. Family and friends have come and gone, but my 928 is still here. I also still have a GTS. I used to buy all my parts from an outfit in Boston, I forget their name. They are long gone.

NO, I do not qualify as an old timer here: absolutely solo with the WSM's until turning on a home computer in 2003.

Agreed. I've had many 928's ... and many women .. but never one that would pose with my 928 like that

Porshe fans, Porshe list, and so on provided lots of help. Gene O'Rourke's writings, and exploits in his S4, were an inspiration. I have all I could find pasted into a doc file. Gene provided inspiration beyond his prose too. I bet this one brings back memories.

I got my '91GT in 12/95 and then looked for a web forum to find out more about the car (backasswards I know).

Found porschefans in early 1996 and mainly lurked; posted a few times as kevinvin IIRC. I was a charter member of 928OC; paid my fee, never received or heard a thing until I got a license-plate frame and window sticker a couple of years later.

I still see a lot of the old names here: Wally P, Chuck Z, Dr Bob, Randy V, Louis Ott, DR, the good folks at 928 Intl, and Devek until not too long ago.

I posted a while back asking where some of the old-timers like Leonard Laub, Ed "YMMV" Ruiz, and Phil Tong were up to. I seem to remember GeneO getting pissed at someone on the list after he posted the famous "rear ends" picture. The person he got upset with was in the NE (Maine IIRC) and kept referring to his GF as a novitiate (gotta be RC to recognize that arcane reference).

I came back to Rlist a couple of years ago while researching a new Pcar purchase. Despite some turmoil this is still a great technical resource and social network (even though I've never met anyone here!).

Nice thread Kevin

I've had more 928's than women... What does that mean??? Probably that I did not take advantage of many things... and/or advantage of to many 928's that were presented to me! LOL!

I got my first 928 in '96, it was an '88 S4. Drove it tonight! What a car!

I certainly am not an ol' timer, but I remember readin through the emails (digest version) then moving to the web forum back in '02. Seems longer than 7 years.

I'll never forget Ed Ruiz. He had a lot of knowledge and a passion for chastizing anyone who even suggested that they may have participated in a "street race". You gotta admit it was fun around here with him.

YMMV!

I believe you're a 928 oldtimer if the term "wingnut" or "contact patch" evokes any memories.

Bought my first GT in 1998 after wanting one for years. Lurked around Porschefans, was a big fan of Phil Tong's 928s4vr, etc.

Still subscribe to the RL 928 email list in digest mode, can remember when there were easily 100+ posts per day. Now a big day is a dozen posts, as most of the action is here on the forum.

IIRC, that was Roger Woodbury.

Does anyone remember back when Dave R was just a lister who was selling parts in his garage?
Yep, I remember meeting David at the 1st Frenzy in Fairfax, Va.....
He had a black OB with Cup 1 wheels on it hammered down to the ground..... When I saw him pull in, I was smitten, as it was the first time I'd seen one with a right and tight tire fitment and stance.....
Then, when David had his first Sharks On The Lake in Georgia, I remember seeing Fat Albert... another 928 with super-fat tires on the original Kinesis Wheels.....
I got my first 87' 5spd. in October of 92', and wrecked it in 02'..... (Heart-breaking......) (had $30k in upgrades and maintenance on that puppy....)
I then bought my current 93' GTS 5spd. and a couple years later, the 91' GT, and a beater 87' 5spd....
I believe you're a 928 oldtimer if the term "wingnut" or "contact patch" evokes any memories.
Yeah, I first found the Porsche-fans list around 93'...?, I remember those conversations, so, yep, I guess I'm an old timer.... (and sadly, older....)
I used to really enjoy the banter on that list, back when we were still trying to figure out tire fitments, the Weissach principle, and Wingnuts..... Hee, hee......
I haven't heard from Leonard Laub in a while either..... Hope he's well....
Phil Tong had a great site, as did Stephane ? Are they still in 928's....?
What about Kurt Gibble,..... Anybody heard from him.....?
Of course, there is the joy of driving one, but the friends I've made through these cars have been one of my biggest joys in my life..... What a great bunch of folks...... (Whether they're still in one or not....)
Here's to those friendships and more as time goes by......

Warmest Regards,

I started off on the mailing list but my pea-brain couldn't keep track of multiple threads with multiple concurrent posters. Some wouldn't use a 'reply' to a thread so there were sometimes many disparate messages floating around with the same 're:subject' name, unconnected as a thread. My usenet reader did a better job of tracking threads! So I switched to digest mode, fine for me except I could be as much as a day out of the sequence with others still in instant mode. The web forums offer the best of both worlds, provided you have a decent high-speed connection. I guess everybody does these days so no worries. Current system lets us plow past thredas we don't want to read, posts by people that we want to ignore never even show up on the lists. and threads are managed very well by the host boardware. The mail list is sparsely populated, although there are still thoudsands subscribing I understand. No clue how many are dumbed into the big bit-bucket without being read. I still read them when I get them, or within a day anyway. I also like to read the posts on the OC web forum, although there are relatively few posting there on any kind of a regular basis. At least not like this group anyway.

"Contact patch" and "Wingnut" are similar to "torque vs horespower", "venturi", and a few other key words and phrases currently in anti-vogue here. Ya gotta know when to walk away, know when to run. Right?

Ahhh, the good old days!

Hey hey Jim and others who qualify as the Old Guard or Motley Crew! Yes, many have pics of those TALAMB special shorts, I still get one or two sent to me for a howl from time to time. Few probably know the real story of how they came to be... It was a "crack at the track" that started it all when I told a bunch of semi-local hounds they could take a look at my butt (meaning the 928's rear end) after a lot of razzing from the 911 crowd. Well they did on more than a few occasions and it became sort of a taunting chant at the cookouts between track days. It just kept on going from there and Teri designed and made quite a few of the Special Pants and shorts so everyone could Take A Look At My Butt. Even have a pair of tuxedo pants like that, wore them to an art show and the ladies kept pulling up the tail on my jacket to get a peek... At the 2000 Wichita event there was so much going on it just seemed right to sport a pair or two at the Hallett Track event and again for the rooftop parking structure photo shoot. Gotta have some crazies at these events, huh?! Might as well be the farking organizer...

Zachman that pic was a good find with those looong legs sticking out of the mail slot up in Colorado. That was quite a trip with Kiwi Philip Adamson, fiance Vivi, Mo, Kim Crumb and others at the Steamboat PCA Parade. Maybe 1998? Hey it's in Keystone this summer. Cool, I'm going back up.

Good times with all you 928ers... Just amazing. I am certain I qualify as an Old Timer...I bought my first 81 in 1982 from my former father-in-law before I married his daughter. Still have the car and three kids but the former wife not oh well. I figure I have purchased around ten or so, moving a few on to pals but keeping quite a few. Hard to sell the "kids" if ya know what I mean doggone it. Running with 5 P cars at the moment. A real coconut.

It was the Frenzy events, DR's SITL and SITMs, DEVEK Days and 928 Intl events (many more) that I found fellow coconuts and made lasting friendships. Wonderful folks, thanks all for being nice to this 928 fanatic! Fun stuff Hound Doggies. Some pics I recently found of the early events reminded me of the fooling around back then so I sent a few copies to those involved ha ha, guess that's what started this particular thread anyway. Best to all!

I bought the replacement chassis for my former '82 from Dave Humphries in '86 or something. At least I know I started the project about then, but it went on for a pretty long time. I think half the paper work said Garner and Humphries and the other half said AF and A. I remember buying some parts (don't remember what, though) from Mark for the same project out the back door of his prior business (electronics?) before he started 928 intl. I don't remember if I hooked up with that via the Pomona swap meet or an ad in Panorama. Didn't find the online community until much later, though.

Bought my "one and only ever" Porsche back in the Summer of '90. Of course it broke down on the way home. But Las Cruces NM to Toronto was a hell of a drive home.

Soon learned that no one around could or knew how to work on the beast.

Finding 928Int'l through a small ad in Automobile Mag was a godsend.

Discovering Phil's site and PorscheList in '97(98? 99?) - nirvana.

All wine and warm martini's after that!

Hi guys,

Where the heck did this thread come from? I must have overdosed on Gerital or had a "Senior Moment" to have missed this one already into 3 pages.

HELLO to ALL you "old farts", "those were the days" has never been used so perfectly to describe the way things were back in the Porsche Fans days. Well, maybe except for the 80s nightclub scene...

I still have MANY of the e-mails from those days, I went back reading few a thru before posting. I though this one would be the best for now.

Do any of you remember Vince Yu, here is the list of the old gang he compiled and posted for all of us on Porsche Fans just over 11 years ago(I deleted the e-mail addresses from the list in case some were still active). Look closely at the names, I am sure some will recall even more memories of the "good ole days"..

BTW, as Jeff Foxworthy would say " If you ain't on this list, you might not be an OLE-TIMER"
