Like many, I came across Phil Tong's site while I was researching my first 928 purchase. That site was an invaluable 928 resource during the dawn of the internet.

I got to be good cyber-friends with Gene, both on and off the email list. We had made plans to meet in Florida, but then he was diagnosed with that brain tumor before we could get together.

He went fast after that, as often is the case with the brightest stars.

Nicely said RV! Like most, I was shocked by the news. We've lost a couple good ones here b/f their time. Scott Mohr to mention another who even some of the noobs will know.

AFAIK, GeneO only sent out the one pic. Other folks, needing to out do GeneO, posted their pics. I could blur certain bits to PG-13 standards. I suspect, however, that the models (and 928 owners) might want to forget about them. Also, I don't know the names that go with the 928s. Seems like trouble to me.

If any of those old timers are still here and want to dredge and blur-up their old nekid 928 pics and post them, then...

Actually, there is one picture I have, for which I don't mind any embarrassment that might follow its re-posting. I think this picture represents the first time I ever wanted "my click back" (at least the e-mail digest equivalent.) Seems some of the 928 owners decided that they themselves could one-up GenoO:

The file date on this is 6/1/99. (Anyone want to claim credit?)

I'm going to see what else I can find that he wrote, his posts alluded to writing for a few magazines.

I joined the email list around 2000-2001 when I stumbled upon it while looking for information on my 86.5 S. I really enjoyed reading Gene's postings, particularly his thoughts on SUV's . I used to correspond a bit with Dave Schaffer and worry a bit about him during his bouts with hurricanes and his failing health. I hope he's still around! My most notable contribution to the email list was my problem with the unique 85-86 exploding intake problem. I have seen my post referred to here a time or two. I used to get every post on email, but that got to the point of becoming somewhat overwhelming, finally going to digest mode, but that just wasn't the same. Once this forum got running I almost never checked back in. Too late now I guess!

I was on Porschefans back then, but don't see my name on the list. That was about the time that the idea for the 928 Owners club was conceived.

Brian Robinson (Berobi)
Alan Ng
Steve (shoot what was his last name with the '86 fancy-name-for-blue colored car)

I can remember posts by Phil tong about physically advancing cam for performance gains. Before he bailed and got a RX7 Turbo (Boo!)

Maybe I didn't use the email list service and just hung out on the message board....

James, you been in Charlotte since back then? Do any events with PCA? Reason I ask, as I used to be really active and did a stint as Pres in 99.

IIRC, Porschefans started out as a mailing list then a website then RL (last time Porsche clamped down on the use of its name....), perhaps you were just on the website? I'm a slow learner and didn't get on the website myself for well over a year.

Nah. I have been in Charlotte for only 7 years. I am a Silicon Valley California refugee. I was PCA member out there starting in '95 or 96. I've been hanging out at Carolinas DE events for the last 5 years. I've been to a couple of SITMs - I was the only one with the audacity to show up in an unwashed 928

I think I picked up on Porschefans when the website came out. I couldn't figure out why I would want to be flooded with emails so never touched that part. Found Rennlist years later when I was web-searching for "928 Supercharger" but didn't join until, well, whatever my join date is here

<--- to the left and up a bit.

I don't believe we have ever met, but I recognize your face from the Carolinas Region pics, newsletters, etc.

"Happy Motoring!"

"Keep the shiny side up."

WOW, DR that goes WAY BACK MAN! I remember those days. I used to read every freaking email on the PorscheFans928 site or whatever it was called. Finally got to the point where it would take an hour or more and I gave up!

I think you can still access most all of the Phil Tong info via the 928 Owners Club if I am not mistaken!

Here's the Porschefans mailing list search from Charlie Kindel. Only some stuff still works.

Here's a Gene O' post I found entertaining......

Subject: Re: Thilo Cort's oil consumption

Thilo,

Your remark concerning oil consumption at an indicated 180 mph makes perfect sense. also, the blue smoke your friends noticed can easily be explained. An 87S4 with automatic transmission can reach 180mph approximately three seconds after if falls out of a C-130. The blue smoke your friends noticed was not coming from your car. It was seeping up through cracks in the autobahn from a place far below. If you heard any other sound over the anguished scream of the engine, it may have been Gabriel blowing his horn. Cruising at or below 150mph will dramatically decrease both oil consumption and tire wear. Now that you've identified yourself as an attorney, I'll reiterate my earlier remarks about playing on the freeway. Perhaps you should add some teflon coated rosary beads to your mirror. They may come in handy.

Yo where did this guy come UP with this shat? Geno was totally entertaining and quite the hoot.

Perfect. Liked those nice rear ends too as I recall, on the 928s and the fairer sex...

What I think about every time I drive that 88 S4 is the wonderful Club Sport springs you and DR got me hooked up with wayyyy back when. It is just crisp and sharp to drive, I'm taking it today dammit. Oh and I finally got me some of those fancy sport seats, you know the kind with increased lateral support. That Paul Champagne is just the ticket...

Gotta go experience driving bliss on the way to work oh yeah.

Marc
