Default Rubber Hose Insertion

not up my rear please
Does anybody have any tips for inserting the various rubber hoses onto the fittings of all of those glorious complicated things under our hoods? I'm struggling to get the two power steering lines inserted onto the new reservour. Any tips for making them go on all the way and smoothly?

isopropil alcohol works good a small dab with a Qtip on the hose and fitting it slides right on and then it evaporates

WD 40 works great for this application.

The problem with WD 40 is that the connection is now more apt to slip off as well. I have seen the isopropil used with good success. Also, for vac lines that are a slip fit that you do not want to come loose easily, spray a little hairspray on the hose and this will lubricate enough for insertion, then when the hairspray dries it locks the hose into place well.

if you put the end in a cup of boiling water they will become more supple so they will stretch more

For vac lines, I prefer to use a little spit to help put them on. Does the trick, and unlike the hairspray method the hoses can be removed easily when needed. For the PS lines, use a little dab of ATF.

P-80 from International Products is a great product for lubing up for insertion of rubber items.

http://www.ipcol.com/shopexd.asp?id=16

Copied from their website...

P-80® Emulsion Temporary Assembly Lubricant eases installation of tight-fitting rubber and plastic parts by reducing the force needed for assembly. Once assembly is complete, the lubricant dries and the part returns to its original condition. P-80 Temporary Assembly Lubricants can be applied manually or automatically, by dip, brush, or spray techniques.

I ordered a small sample tube (its free) and it has been one of the most used, helpful items I have found.

Highly recommended.

Hair dryer and heat if the lub is a no go.
