I'm new to rennlist. I just made an impulse buy and bought a 1980 928. It showed up on Raleigh craigslist for $3500, it was super fun to drive, fast and a 5 speed, so I grabbed it. The title and odometer say it only has 37K miles??? I am quite sure this will be a money pit but I am still excited to restore this thing and drive it while I am restoring it. I'm looking for a little advice.
Does anyone know what color this is (paint code)? It is a repaint, the original looked like a darker choclate brown.
It definitely needs paint. My kids want me to paint it red. I kinda like what's on it now, or black. Thoughts?
Any good repair shops in Richmond VA? I have it at Import Autohaus and they seem pretty sharp and reasonable.
I have it in the shop now. I am replacing the leaky gas tank, cam seals, timing belt and rear shift coupling (slop). I will try and do most of the rest of the wrenching myself.
I ordered some new recaro knock off seats, dash cover and misc used parts to get the interior presentable. I also got the ball cup bushing and I am going to try that fix for the slop too. Did I mention I am on a budget? For now I am going to focus on making it a good driver and enjoying it.
I have always loved these cars. I had a picture of a black one on my wall when I was in high school that had a sticker on the window that said "slow traffic move right". This site has already been a big help.

WELCOME and Congratulations on the new addition - looks like no sunroof, no rubstrips, 5-speed, nice wheels, 37K miles - great score! Getting it back to factory spec while enjoying driving it is a great way to go - double the pleasure!

Welcome to the club! I saw this car listed on CL. Not a bad price for a 5sp. Be prepared to open your wallet and take care of all the deferred maintenance. You're gonna enjoy the love/hate relationship that comes with these cars (i.e When it's good, it's good!). They're a blast to drive, have loads of torque, and can be very reliable cars.

Thanks for the welcome! Looking forward to getting my hands on it to start wrenching/restoring. It really runs strong, handles great and feels very fast, but I know it needs tlc. I thought the timing belt was the most important thing to start with. I really am just busy now, so I have the shop taking care of the initial issues. I didn't want to blow myself up trying to replace my gas tank either. I need to get a workshop manual or the discs that are mentioned on the faqs to give it a tune up, change the fluids etc.

Welcome to the club, you are going to love your car.
I try to tell folks that bring 928's to my shop, I will help you learn to work on it if you are willing, because with these cars you either need to learn how to work on it or have very deep pockets.
I am not trying to come off negative in any way, but I hope the shop you have it at knows 928's.

I hear ya Greg. I have seen several porsches at this shop, and they have been in business since 1969. I spoke to the mechanic and had him do once over and I was impressed with his feedback. They also let me order/supply my own gas tank to save some money. I checked the shop list in the faqs and there were none listed in Richmond. The repairs they are doing now are pretty basic anyway. Hopefully most of the work in the near future I will be doing myself. I really just wanted these things done quick so I could be out enjoying it now. I am certainly no expert on 928s (this is my first) but I have restored several cars over the years and I enjoy the challenge... most of the time

Take a systematic approach to owning the car (as it appears that you are) and you'll probably be fine with it and really enjoy it.
I wouldn't repaint it just yet (some of these guys have had great results just claybar and buffing etc) and if you do, consider restoring the original color. It not only holds the car's value better but will keep it a bit of a classy and exotic sleeper that doesn't broadcast itself to the cops every time you drive it.

Congrats on the purchase. First thing I would do is set the ride height and get an aligment. From the pics, it's sitting very low in the front and the compressor is just looking for a rock to get knocked off on.

Once you get the initial work done at the shop drive it for a while to sort out what else might need to be done, then prioritize the work and plan it out. You will also find some very helpful suppliers here that will really help you get what you need, when you are ready to start wrenching yourself.
