The perfect solution would be to machine a groove into the oil pan and use an o-ring type gasket. But of course, that would be major $$$

That spacer/grommet or whatever you call it was interesting, but the issue I have with them is they do fall out of the gasket. We spent a bit of time trying to account for each one of them before reassembly because I didn't want one stuck in a bad place.

The current SOPG is just fine using the stud kit, as long as you don't over tighten it.

Any spacer would have to 'fixed'; like the solution Porsche has with the 32v valve cover.
And on the Porsche 32 valve cover they have shouldered bolts to keep them from being overtightened.

The shouldered bolts act like a spacer.
