Default Are these Koni Red Struts Externally Adjustable?

The previous owner that had Devek install Koni Red shocks and struts says they are externally adjustable. The rears have the **** blade on the top and turn about 3 turns to adjust like the Koni Yellows on my 951. However the fronts look totally different and the blade thing only turns about 1/4 turn. Is there some other way to externally adjust front Koni red struts?
Here is pic.

I had externally adjustable Konis on the 89GT and they looked just like yours. The white **** wouldn't fit on the fronts because of the proximity of the fender. I made a little wrench to adjust the fronts. BUT, mine (both fronts and rears) would turn about 3 revolutions from full soft to full hard. Somethings wrong with your fronts.

Thanks, guess I will have to look into it. The tab the **** goes on is bigger on the fronts and has a washer on it. The rears just have the tab sticking up. When I asked the previous owner, he said they were externally adjustable but had to get under the car to adjust them.

FWIW:

My GTS came with a set of these, and the plastic asjustment **** that doesn't fit on the fronts. Lacking the skill to fab a wrench that would work, I searched around and found a tool made for E36 M3's and M-coupes by a guy named Ron Stygar in Connecticut. Ordered Tuesday night, it arrived today. He makes a large tab and a small tab tool- we have the large (0.288" width) tabs on Koni 8240 series externally adjustables. It's the perfect length to clear the fender lip on the 928.

RonStygar@aol.com. No affiliation, just a happy customer.

I don't recall which is which, but I do know that one set has way more adjustment than the other (fronts vs. rears) on my ext adj koni's.

Rob,
Have you found a good street setting yet with the Koni/Eibach's??
Curry here locally is running his full soft and seems to like them.
Thx!

Fronts have about 3 turns, the rears have 2.5.

As I got it, the car was set full hard in front, and 3/4 from hard in the rear. It has Eibach/928Intl springs, stock swaybars and Ott droplinks. Ride heights are 145/155 F/R. I'm going to start 1/2 turn from full soft on all 4 corners and go from there.

I know it's a 'what oil should I use' question, but I have to confess that I don't know the first thing about suspension setups- All I know is that hitting my head on the roof on every moderate bump isn't real pleasant. A quick search seems to suggest that for anything other than track driving or living in magicroadland with perfect streets, somewhere between 1/2 turn and 1 turn from soft is reasonable. I was going to couple that with bringing up the ride heights to 155-160ish and then align it this week.

Honestly I should probably set it whereever it'll minimize the consequences of momentary lapses of reason with all the new power. Gotta re-learn how to drive here...

I had put Koni reds onto my '85. At the time, the dealer I bought them from (Koni dealer, not Porsche dealer) said that they could only be adjusted if removed from the car and fully compressed. There was a company that would modify them to be adjustable on the car, but that mod cost about the same as the shocks themselves. I opted not to do that, and just had the shocks set pretty soft before install, as was the general recommendation at the time (1998).

RKD,
I had a new set of Konis modified by their racing operation before I installed them on my '89 S4. The rears are about 3 turns from soft to full firm, while the fronts are about 2 turns S to F. I used a grinder to put a "slit" in a small 1/2 inch socket, so it fits over the end of the adjustment rod. I then use a 1/4 inch drive swivel to change the settings from soft for driving to and from the tracks and to my preferred firm settings (not full firm) for the track driving.

Good luck,

Gary Knox

Just to update everyone...

I talked to several people and eventually the actual guy at Koni that converted my Koni Reds to externally adjustable. The rears are the standard 3-1/2 turns from soft to firm, the fronts are only 1/4 turn.

The koni **** I have fits both the front and rear adjuster tabs. I found you can order the ***** from Paragon for about $4.00 and it comes with 3 sizes of inserts to fit the various tab sizes.

I just grab mine with a needle nose vise grip. (as the tool is kind of tough to fit on the passenger side)
anyway, its not a full turn, more like a half of a turn for mine. is that bump and compression? if so, the are different that the devek level 2 shocks, which have a compression adjustment at the lower attachement point. (for a screwdriver flat head adjustment with settings 0-10)

The adjustment on the top, done with the **** is bump/rebound. According to the guy at Koni mine are only rebound adjustable.
