Thats where religion comes in.

Since i dont know anyone that has ever used a filter from Amsoil, I wouldnt take the chance. I pray to the Mahle gods that their filters are good.

I've had issues with Fram oil filters on my e30 BMW's and will not use them again!

Don't know why Ferrari seem to like orange filters.

Don't oil filters also control oil flow with pressure relief valve as well as filter the oil?

I order Purolator from Advance Auto.

When it comes, it is a Mann black filter inside.

Same experience here. Purolator makes decent oil filters for all cars.

I believe the pressure relief valve/bypass valve's primary function is to allow oil flow to the engine once the filter media is clogged with crap. In the case of Fram, your engine will be filled with the filtering media as well as dirty oil.

As for Ferraris, who ever actually drives them anyway?

Back to the Purolator for a just a second...

I mean, literally, inside the tall Purolator box is a black Mann filter, not a Purolator.

Usually.

Every once in a while (twice), when I order the Purolator part number a shorter version of the box arrives, with the same exact #, and its a short Purolator filter. I just don't take posession of those, they order another, and its correct.

Even though I'd read this thread before, I still managed to buy an old stock Fram PH6583 off eBay sometime during the Christmas holidays. I can't remember when, which probably explains it.

So the bypass valve in the Mahle filter is designed to switch if the filter gets completely clogged? When does the bypass valve in the block come into play then?

I also heard that the position of the bypass valve in the Fram filter is such that clean oil will wash all the filtered crap off the filter and back into your engine (IIRC bypass valve is in the bottom of the filter as opposed to the top of the filter like the Mahle).

Is the Mann filter pretty much the same as the Mahle in terms of design?
