Question "FRAM" oil filter for the 928 ?

Fram #PH6583!!!!!!!!!!! Down to my last spare filter, I decided to get a new supply from the local parts store.....FRAM and shorter; I left after questioning the visual difference; not confident, I took my last MAHLE back to the store to explain my dismay... the salesman cross referenced the numbers and said the Fram is a listed equal. This is serious business does a smaller filter do the same job, can the technological experts help me pleasssssseee. I may have to restock from Hershey '09.

Why not just order more of the Mahle's from one of the usual vendors?

The Fram will likely do the job OK, but has a simple problem-- It's tougher to get the wrench on it. As others suggest, it's way too easy to just call one of your favorite vendors and have half a dozen OEM's shipped to your house. Pull out the little wish-list page from your logbook, add six filters to it, call the order in now. They and the other wish-list items will be on your doorstep in time to get it all done before Hershey.

Please support your 928 parts vendors. They make ownership possible for folks like me.

Fram filters are nothing but junk. Go with the Mahle from one of the vendors on this forum, as others have already said.

I wouldn't put a Fram on my winter beater! Do a google search on oil filter comparisons. Fram ALWAYS comes out near the bottom. They are junk IMHO!

Just in case you don't believe the previous guys. Here is one more.

DON'T UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES INSTALL FRAM FILTERS ON ANY VEHICLE.

THEY ARE JUNK. Your 928 engine is worth too much to risk on a filter that is trash. Even your old winter beater deserves better.

Oil is the life blood of the engine..............why mess with it?

Some of our vendors even include the drain plug crush washer with the proper Mahle filter.

The proper filter is very little more expensive than the Fram - and in addition to the proper filter being much better, Jeannie tapes one of the correct oil pan plug crush rings to each filter...

Here is a good report on filters in general - it doesn't cover ours, but is still interesting.

Call Roger. Cant be much more than $20 for a couple shipped. I know its more than twice what frams are but well worth it.

Heck, I will pay the difference.....because "friends dont lets friends use fram filters!"

+1 - take a look at http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilters/index.html for some good filter analysis.

Default OKAYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!

What a beating, ayeee, my back is sore. Okay, Okay,Okay gentlemen, your points are all well taken , I had my last Mahle .....wanted to prep for the upcoming safe funnnnnn days ,( which are going to be marred by many more cops on the revenue hunt) I was hoping to find a Mahle for "sidepipes" around the corner and complete the prep. Every year I get a few Mahles at Hershey for the girls, however, you guys are right I should get everything from our suppliers knowing how hard they work to keep us running . Very interesting read W.P...thank you. Retuned the FRAM already.....sent it flyinggg through the window at the salesman , now I need a lawyer!!!!!!!! any suggestions

if you're really in a pinch you can use a Mahle filter for a watercooled VW (gas not diesel). same filter, couple inches shorter...
