I don't know Kevin, my 930 does almost 90 mph in 1st bone stock. And for some reason, when you rev the flat 6 in neutral, it just sounds like a factory built race car. Real nasty! It snarls and barks, and if you have good ears, and can slow your mind enough, it's almost like you can count the explosions. In a word: intoxicating.

Here's my take: When I drive the 911, I truly think to myself "there's no other car I'd rather be driving right now," I absolutely love everything about these cars. When I finally get out of the 911 and into the 928, I quickly foget about the 911 and think to myself "there's no other car I'd rather be driving right now." Fact is I get more seat time in the shark than my beloved Carrera but to say one is better than the other is just not in my vocabulary. They are completely different animals and to compare the two is like apples and oranges. I love both for what they are.

Almost ten years ago I purchased an '88 triple black 928 S4 A/T.
It was my first Porsche.
It's been my only Porsche.
I will never part with it.
I have no need to look elsewhere for thrills, inspiration, or driving excitement.
I've driven my fair share of exotics and performance cars, and nothing has the look, feel, fit, or finish of a 928. I've driven faster, better handling cars with stop the traffic drop dead good looks, but the 928 is the only one that is the whole package: Daily driver, grocery getter, kid hauler, track beast, cruise missile.

Only have the 928 s4 but still someday want a 911 turbo.I look at it as its not how much power you make but how much power you can get the the ground, all wheel drive seems the way to go to put the power to the ground.

The '73 914 I have is like a go cart, tons of fun for what it is (all stock motor) Of the 3 944's ('84, '87, '90 cabrio.) The convertable with the 3.0 is definetly fun and looks fantastic. The '84 would be next as it is also a 5 speed. The '87 is automatic and lacks the poop of the 5 speeds. Both 928's are absolutely great. They have both comfort and power, look stunning, and are decent on fuel.

Impressions

914, go cart.
944 Turbo, driving in a task chair.
Boxster, driving in an open air task chair.
928, driving in a lazyboy.

Mason WTF reving an engine in neutral ?? me thinks you should have no problem with ... " can slow your mind enough " . And too bad about the almost 90 in first ...your car could use more and lower gears. Plus I highly doubt that you have all stock exhaust so the point about the noise is meaningless. Basically what you need is not "good ears" but a vivid imagination as you rev the engine in front of the high school.........

The reason I had asked was because most people think of the 911 for performance. I remember them not being very comfortable with hard clutches.

Driving a 911 quickly requires a lot more attention , RPM , shifting , carefull throttle control......in short a much less forgiving car than a 928. A 928 can make a bad driver look like a GOOD driver

90mph in 1st gear? I think you mean 90kmh. I don't think there is any stock road car existing that has such a largely geared 1st. You would need like 1000hp to put enough power to the ground. It's like starting a 928 out in 3rd gear.

Like many others on the list, I saw a 928 in the 80's in Germany, and England, and fell in love. At age 11, I built a 1/20 scale Tamiya model of the 928S and decided I would try to own one when I could afford one. The 84 928S was my first 928, followed by an 88S4, a 93 GTS, and then 2 years ago a 91' GT. I've really enjoyed each of these cars. The first Porsche for me was a 85.5 944, 1/2 of the motor, and 1/2 the price (at the time). Enjoyed the 944 so much I gave one to my wife for our first anniversary. Never ever came close to doing anything "right" for subsequent anniversaries :-).
I have driven a 993, owned a 99' and 03 Boxster, and liked all three cars. I'd like to own a 964 or 993 some day as well, and I'd like to keep all three types (911, 944, & 928) and enjoy them :-)

I had a 968 6-spd before getting the GTS. A nice car, but nowhere near as solid and substantial as the 928, and it felt like a Toyota Corolla below 3,000 rpm. It's a car most enjoyed when "driven in anger", which was not always a good influence on a driver ;-)

The comfort, torque and solidity of the 928 put it in a whole different class.

Well in short, I can fit in a 928.
