Default 1985 928 not worth anything

So I went to compact car corner in lynnwood wa looking at a 1968 plymouth sattelite with a 340 auto and told they sales person that I would trade my 1977 corvette 4 speed and my 1985 928S 5 speed for the car and they told me they would give me aprox. $9,000 for the corvette but had no interest in the porsche because they could not sell it. I explained what the porsche was and the sales guy agreed that it was an awsome car but that he could not sell it. I was shocked that they had no interest in the porsche. In the long run I am probably better off with both the cars I own, but was rather shocked by the response to the Porsche. They were asking aprox. $17,000 for the Mopar.

Default Pitfalls

The dealer is probably aware that 928s can be a lot of headaches. He may know someone that got burned. IF he is a reputable man, he might feel like warranting the car for some amount of time and the repairs can be incredible. Combine that with the possibility that he would want his own people to do the work and there is a very good possibility that his people just said no as they didn't want to get in over their heads. You would do better on the open market. If it is half decent you should be able to get something for it. These cars can do serious economic damage to dealers that are not experienced with Porsches. Lastly, these cars cannot be flipped easily and hence are not appealing to anyone with a profit motive.

Did you by your 928 off a car lot or from an individual?

There is a reason why 928s are RARE. Porsche could not sell them ! Porsche didnt stop making them for no reason , people stopped buying them. They are stupid cheap now much like XJS Jaguars , big old BMWs and Mercs. The 928 assembly line and yes it was a line was set up to build about 5,000 per year most years it was far less than that.

From the ads that I've seen, it seems that by the time a 928 gets to an independent used car dealer it has many problems that even we amateurs can spot in fuzzy photos. Easy to understand why they don't want them. 928 market values are a funny thing. To paraphrase Jim Bailey, you generally get a $5K car, and put $5K into it to end up with a $5K car.

Yep, these cars are worthless. No business wants to have an asset that will sit on the lot for many months, and then take less than $2k in profit when they finally sell it. The 928s only go to enthusiasts so the general motoring public could care less about the performance, style or badge. All they see are headaches and bills.

Sorry.

I purchased my 928 two rears ago for $5,800 from an individual and have done some work to it getting everything to work. I don't know the current value but probably would have taken $6,000 or there abouts. I thought it was an interesting story and was a bit suprised that such an incredible car was not even wanted by the dealership. They didn't even try to lowball me it was just a flat out "not interested" Thanks for your responses! Mark

oops, I can't spell! It has 116,000 miles, 5 speed S4 manhole cover rims, tan interior, worn but in good condition almost everything now works. Paint is original and in good shape except for the rub strip. New tires. rebuilt intake with new injectors.

I'm thrilled at how under-appreciated and upopular the 928's are.

I drive past dozens of balding men in shined up 60's hardware every day and simply smile.

9 years ago I had pegged the floor value of my 86.5 928 at $10,000.

I was wrong.

Shawn, you mean...knowing there is nothing in their midst that can take you.... and having that little added surprise under the hood if anybody otherwise might have had a chance...
