ok so the pump does in fact run when you jumped it? Or you mistook the PSD pump cycling for the fuel pump?

I pulled the outside fuel pump and threw 12v to it...nothin'. reversed the polarity...nothin". You could hear it bump/tick, but will not run.
I've never dealt with the inside pump. Is it the same procedure as noted in the WSM 20-14? Unless someone can tell me where to find it and how to check it (if necessary) before I pull it. Do I have to drop the gas tank?

Hi Keith,
If you put voltage to the pump and nothing happened then you probably found your problem. Did you test that 12v was coming from the wires to the pump? That would confirm the rest of your circuit up to your pump is good and the pump was getting the voltage needed.
I replaced both pumps and had to drain and drop the gas tank to get the internal one out.
Good luck,
Constantine

Well you can do the tank either way, but i would remove the sender and see what the internal condition of the tank is, if it has sediment in it it would probably be better to remove it and clean the tank. Remember when refitting the fuel sender sealing nut, that you should soak the nut in boiling water for a few mins then install it. (per the WSM)
OR you can probably keep the tank in the car, however you will need it to be empty and the tank support might have to be lowered, you can try removing 2 of the bolts so it swings down a bit, this will let you get a socket on the pump and let it slide straight out.
If you can, try lightly tapping on the outside pump with the wires reversed you may dislodge the debris in the pump if it wont turn try pouring some marvel mystery oil in the inlet .
Warning dont hammer on the pump body as the magnets that are lining the inside of the housing will crack. Make sure to replace all of the sealing rings and if the short metal hose has been leaking or crimped on it would be wise to replace it now, also replace the fuel pump check valve and fuel filter.

I just did my GTS. No reason to drop the tank. I loosened the front strap bolts and removed the back strap bolts, The strapping and outside pump and filter drop down and leave plenty of room to remove the in tank pump.
There is no check for the in tank pump since it will probably be running fine but the hose between the two halves of the pump will more than likely be shot.
It's necessay to empty the tank before removing the in tank pump.

Temp pump fix
Same symptoms car stopped suddenly. I fixed my outside pump by running a light oil through it when I had it removed from the car. It did required several bumps of reversed polarity to break it loose. I sprayed a lot of W40 into before hooking it up with hoses to a small bucket with a light oil. I did replace it with a new pump and kept the old one as a spare in the car. I found that my inside pump wasn't working due to the slide on contacts being dirty. This is about two years ago right now it appears that the outside pump start to get a whinning sound to it and I suspect the inside pump to be out of service.

Glad you found it!!! Changing the external (main) pump is pretty easy...just make sure you only use those damm copper washers ONCE (ask me how I know) oh ya and don't torque too much on that bent metal pipe that goes from the pump to the filter, or it will leak (again ask me how I know)
the new pump should come with the check valve already in it, thats good too.....chances are your intank pump has the broken hose, since just about all of them do.....you don't have to drop the tank to get it out, but might want to if you need to clean it anyway?

Tried to "fix" the outside pump. Soaked it with WD40 and bumped it several times switching polarity. Unless this pump runs whisper quiet, it doesn't want to free up. When I switch polarity, it does bump, but that's it. Took the inner pump out and it had the separated hose syndrome, that pump works fine. I will replace the hose and put it back together and re install. I know some will say replace it, but times are tight and barfing out another $200 for that won't fly right now.
Anyway, I'll let the exterior pump soak in WD40 for a bit and try it later....maybe I'll get lucky
Anybody got a well working used pump?
