Default Shifter ball install consensus

I have been reading a few posts about installing the shifter ball cup. Is the consensus that I should install the plastic piece on the ball first then attach the arm. The lower bell housing is out and arm is hanging, I want to make sure this seems like a one shot item. It looks easy from the top but I heard its a clearance issue. What lube would you use is lithium OK?

Having had multiple failures of the plastic one, I am going with 928 motorsports all metal one. Luckily I have my motor out so the install should be easy.

no grease, it might not allow it to slip on correctly (will slip off before you can get it on). leave it in the ball cup. I would take the plastic out and get a spot weld on it while you have it out, and then put the plastic part back on. that what I did.

Leave the cup in place. Replace the bushing in place w/ the same piece you ordered for your pivot arm. Press it all onto the ball by wrapping a ratchet strap around the torque tube and shifter arm and then tightening it down. The cup will "snap" onto the ball. Once you are finished, wrap a piece of tie wire or a large hose clamp around the arm and tube in case it ever wears out again it will not come off and leave you stranded.

Finished

Get the all metal one from 928motorsports......I eventually will install one on my track shark....which is quite a bit easier since you can just cut the torque tube tunnel to make it easier to replace with the TT in the car....

You can do it from underneath once the exhaust and heat shield is down....a bit of a PITA, but using the hose clamp techinque to force the ball into place (if you use a plastic one again) works....the metal one should be easier....

Did I say this incorrect, this the clutch fork ball cup the one that controls the clutch. You can see it from the top, I must be getting old .

It's not clear from the OP whether you are talking about the shifter ball cup or release arm ball cup. I know you wanted to replace the release arm bushing, and the lower BH would be irrelevant for the shift ball cup. So I'm going with release arm.

On the release arm, I installed to the arm then snapped it over the ball. I used some Lubriplate lithium grease to lube it. So far so good, but I've only put ~1K miles on it.

I always called it shift fork bushing not release arm ball cup, coming from the GM world. I need to learn to speak German by the way I already replaced the shifter ball cup. I guess I need to post pictures due to my inability to correctly Id the parts.

I thought you were talking about the shifter ball cup. The arm on front can me pushed on with a pry bar if I remember correctly. You will need to remove the airbox and MAF etc.

I thought you were talking about the shifter ball cup too. I put the plastic cup in the arm and then pressed it onto the ball on the bellhousing. Be sure there is no pressure from the pressure plate etc. when you do this. I.E. the U- clips still in place.

I heard just the opposite ball first then the arm, so hence the ?
Did I really ask for a consensus, I should know better by now?

the best way to install the clutch release arm is first to install the white bushing onto the ball.
Once the clutch is positioned into the car then fit the release arm onto the plastic bushing otherwise you may crack it.
You can fully seat the arm by either using a pry bar up top or getting it started onto the bushing then actuating the clutch this will seat the arm onto the bush.
A small dab of silicone grease onto the ball will do the trick, Dino grease seems to cause the bush to crack over time.

Since the bell housing is out you could also replace the front shifter ball cup mount with Carls part it will last forever once its installed.
( this part is secured to the top of the TT just aft of the connection area to the bell housing)

It may vary a bit from case to case. But in some cases you cannot get the cup onto or off of the bushing with bushing on the ball and the pressure plate tighened down. Also, in some cases the bushing seems to slip on pretty easily while in others it is a real hassle to get it to snap into place. On my '79 the bushing really shapped in place and would not not come off without damage. On my '82 I remember is sliding off easily.

Well I am going to install it on the ball with a little lithium grease make sure its sitting correctly on the PP and try to wedge it in.
