Motor mounts need replacing too....look how low the filler cap is in relation to the cross brace.
Just R&R'd mine and the filler cap is nearly level with the brace.

The "mechanic" should have put "I LOVE YOU" on that bill. Congratulations for keeping the poor soul (PO) from getting raped further.

Hey! They weren't TOTAL rip-offs ...
$ 20.00 for 8 sparkplugs, such a deal I have for you.
As to the ignessen, the nessen part sounds German :<)
I do hope they at least kissed him on the back off his neck when they finished with him.
Looking at the some of the visible, alleged 'work' evokes a vision of a stormy night with
angry, torch bearing villagers (Rennlisters') approaching the Franken-steen Castle/Garage.

It's hard for belivers to see how much head-scratching and 'let's try this and see what happens' diagnosis goes on in a general car repair when an interesting car shows up this way. You are at their mercy for a start. Around here, shops need to be able to bill $150/hr PER BAY to keep good techs and pay for insurance and rent. Dealers show close to $200/hr, and there aren't any trained 928 mechanics left in any of them. Non-dealer shop situation is worse unless you can find someone willing to get serious about the cars. Yes there are places that will do the work, and many owners use them. The self-repairing group here is really just a slice of the total 928-owning population; We may drive them more though since they are so much cheaper for us to own.

And people question when I comment that for most owning a 928 is expensive.... Then we see a $2,400 bill for a failed "repair" .

Just checked the height of my oil filler cap, the top of the fin of the cap is about ten milimetres ( nearly half an inch) up from the bottom of the cross bar.

Looks like, I may need new engine mounts as well?!

What other signs or symptoms are there for the need for replacing engine mounts?

Vibration in the gas pedal. Rev the engine by hand and the block doesn't rock.

The direct motor mount check involves getting under the car and looking at the safety hooks that are installed on the mounts. These have interlocking ends that spread apart over time as the mount collapses. If you can insert more than one finger between the tips of the hooks, the mounts are collapsed or getting there. The hooks are on the rear side of the crossmember on the right side mount and front side on the left. Also, examine the space between the oil pan and the cross-member. This should be close to half an inch. It's the pan making contact with the crossmember that causes the vibration sensation.
