Default Oh no they Dih-nt Excellence 928 vs 951

Just when the infighting between the 928 and 951 crowd seemed to have settled down, Excellence goes and does a comparison between a 1989 951 and a 1988 928 S4.

I won't spoil the ending, but you can read about it here.

Not bad at all, nice comparison. I'll need to pick up this issue.

Thanks!

Great read! Woohoo, we win!

928 heavy this, 928 heavy that. ...I didn't see the ending coming at all.

Thanks for the post.

Decently written. Apples and oranges but the end is the same. With articles like this I might re-up my subscription.

Maybe the folks at Excellence figured out that if they didn't start saying nice things about 928s they'd all wake up one morning with bloody severed 911 heads under their covers?

Good read.

I really think the more time you spend behind the 928 the more you realize just how capable it is. And who can possibly argue having all that torque all the time.

I took my dad out for a ride in the GT a couple of weeks ago (40 F Outside) and I was doing about 35 when I put it into second to pass a car. I didn't give him any warning and snapped the throttle down. He flew back into the seat with his hands flailing. In a matter of a second we were past the car and doing 60 as I put the clutch in. He was pissed

Yes. But doesn't the 997 have PMS. It's not the same weight equivalent with PMS>

Sorta like it's not that hot since it's a dry heat.

Interesting read having owned a driven both at the limits in both stock and modified forms.
It's not the weight difference that makes the 944 FEEL more nibble, it's a combination of two things. First, there is more power assist on the 944s steering. I always assumed the lower assist on the 928 was to make it more relaxing to cruise at triple digits. The other is the 928s weissach rear end. The maximum cornering speed of a tire/wheel is at 8 to 15 degrees slip angle. The slip angle of the front tires is maintained with the steering wheel. The slip angle of the rear tires is maintained by the direction the car is pointing relative to the direction of travel. The weissach rear end turns the rear tires increasing the slip angle of the travel of the car relative to the slip angle of the rear tires. This give a wider angle between straight and turning for the car to rotate making it feel heavy or that it won't rotate and just pushes.

I know my 944S2 isn't a 944 Turbo, let alone a Turbo S, but I claim the right to comment anyway 'cause I (sorta) own both.

The 928 and 944 are different cars - different mission, different market, different feel. I still love them both.

That said, how come these Muttering Rotters - er Motoring Writers - always say the same things?

In this case - the 928 is their choice because the 944 is TOO accomplished and the 928 is thus "more fun".

Then when they compare a 911 to a 944, they choose the 911 because the 944 is TOO accomplished and the 911 is thus "more involving".

I think they just like cars that are harder to drive.
