Default 928 Storage Dolly

Not a mind-blowing clever invention, but if anyone wants to copy this storage dolly just send me a PM for the shop drawing. It has 8" wheels, brakes and locks that allow the wheels be swivel or rigid type. It picks up the car's 4 jack pads and is the right hieght to hold the car with tires clear of the ground.

I'm going to use it for a long term project car that I'll want to move around often.

You are going to need a very clean floor for those casters. I had similar casters on tire dolly's, any little spec would stop them cold.

I first used these casters about 10 years ago. We had a contract to build the chassis and tank assemblies for 50 Aircraft carrier fire trucks. The trucks were made from 1/4" to 3/4" steel plate and easily outweighed a 928. The dollies worked well for moving trucks around our plant and ultimately for shipping the finished units.

WOW! I was wondering the same thing about if they would hold up, but it sure sounds like they will!

Neat!

Very nice. I did mine in wood and it still works, so I am sure your steel one will last eons.

I'd like to see a picture of the car on it.

+1 I had them too and like for you, they were very hard to move on even when the floor was clean. Mine were from HF.

I had much more sucess using a single floor jack, centered under each end of the car.

I understand the problem when using the commercially available wheel dollies as they usually have very small casters (maybe 2-3" diam.wheel) but these wheels are 8" diameter so they roll very well over uneven surfaces. Not for use outdoors off pavement but they have no problem my tar&chip driveway or on and off the car trailer.

I'll take a picture when I get the car on it. I have a two post lift so loading it will be simple but the dolly is designed to be low enough that a standard floor jack will have enough stroke to get the car high enough for loading.

Default Drawing

A bunch of folks have asked so I'll just post the shop sketch here for all. These dimensions work for an early car......I have not checked them against my later GT.

nice equipment Dave ! ... but not for the lowerd Koni/Hypercoil setup racer... those wheels keep dropping when you lift the car.... till the end of the Koni-range. Think i drive on the highest inch range from the Konis....
Once lifted the springs have about 2" free space !

Tha's a nice idea - many of us could probably use a such item. Even better, if it could be disassembled easily for storage, or be compatible with the PorKen lifterbars (lift car with lifter bars, then lower it on this...)

Anyway... does this belong into the "Industrial Fabrication" section?

We use those 8" casters on helicopter dolly's at work, they carry 3300lb 407's easily.
