I loved my 78 280Z. Gutted the emissions stuff, added headers & glass packs (sounded great!). Tossed the front and rear bumpers in the garage. Almost as light as the 240Z. Am I one of the few who appreciated the stable EFI system? Black on Black, 4 speed. 58K on it when I bought it, original paint.

I miss that car. And it's the one that got me into 928's.

I realize that all of my prior cars led up to my eventually getting a 928:

'53 Chevy Pick up - Came stock with a torque tube-maybe the 928 wasn't so advanced after all - The dual quad tunnel ram actually all fit under the hood.

'58 Dodge Long Bed Pick up - 318 with a push button auto - this rig was the burn out king and would smoke them off in all three forward gears.- my first introduction into an Automatic as an actually desirable transmission.

'71 Pinto - Rear seats had about the same legroom as a 928, the A/T shift handle is a dead ringer for the 928.

'71 Vega - Fun fourspeed. Like my 928, I bought a whole bunch of higher performance parts off other Vega's (GT wheels, suspension, interior, etc) to hot rod my own. Why Bother? Yeah, I wonder that now looking back but it was good times at the time. Blew a head gasket and had to replace the head. My first forray into dealing with an alusil block.

'68 El Camino - Performance w/utility, much like the 928. I loved the fact that it provided the intimacy of being a two seater, but had the big honkin' bed in back. During my college years the amount of stuff I owned was limited to what I could carry in the back of the El Camino in one trip. I installed a V-Gate shifter which was the most awesome "fun-enhancer" I've put in any automobile I've owned. Talk about solid shifts...

'64 Dodge Van - The "Magic Bus". The was a short panel van. It was awesome. Three on the tree shifting, the engine was inbetween the front seats. Since the van body had no "nose", wathching the scenery out of the windshield was more like watching a big screen TV. Without fail the passenger would leap out of their seat the first time I pulled nose in against a building to park. They were convinced that we were going to collide being as how when you came to a rest, the winshield was only about 6" from the building. It had a ratty paint job and was rusted, so I volunteered to have a paint party. A couple cases of spray paint and some kegs of beer, turned out pretty wild.
928 reference? Well, not really any other than it was fun to drive.

Nothing notable between the magic bus and the 928: Ford Ranger, GMC Jimmy, Acura Integra, and now a Toyota Tacoma, but the 928 still reigns supreme. (I wonder if I could somehow wedge a Muncie with a V-gate in there? )

Basically I followed suit and this what they did...280Z block with a 71 240Z head with 30K shaved off the head producing 13:1 compression. Used the 5 spd tranny from a 280Z, then added a header, dual weber carbs and motosport 2.5" exhaust all the way back. Let's just say with that kind of compression I learned how to change head gaskets in my sleep. But it sounded like a V8 and would smoke any newer V8 sports car at the time

It's the reason I bought my first (79) 928. I wanted the power without having to work on it all the time (man did I learn my lesson, the 79 kept me in the garage even more)

The 280Z was one helluva car. Here's what I did to mine

1. Big bore throttle body – something like 330 cfm vs the 250 cfm for the stock TB
2. Racer Brown “Turbo” cam, to give more low and mid range tq and hp
3. Lightened flywheel – about 7 lbs taken off
4. Stock clutch but high performance pressure plate – high clamping force but smooth engagement
5. 280Z turbo injectors
6. Additional electric fuel pump
7. Bob Sharp racing oil pump
8. Twin remote oil filters
9. Mallory VoltMaster ll coil – 55,000 volts – had to replace plugs every 5,000 mile
10. Accel plug wires
11. All pistons/rods balanced to ½ gram
12. Chamfered oil holes in crank
13. Intake and exhaust ports opened up to gasket size – very little else
14. 3 angle valve job, valves lapped to seats
15. Street headers, turbo muffler, Ansa tip
16. SCCA front disc setup and SCCA rear drum/shoe setup. The rear shoes were way wider than stock and the drums were heavily finned. I also did a water cooled front brake conversion – long story – it proved to be the most effective way to rust the rotors
17. Shortened shift lever – I mean shortened – about 6” tall!
18. Swapped out 4 speed for 5 speed transmission
19. Swapped 4 speed differential for auto differential. Got better gearing 2.75 vs 2.25 – something like that. Had ‘stump pulling power” in 1st, 2nd – 3rd and 4th were about the same and 5th gave a slight “overdrive” at about .97:1
20. Bob Sharp tension compression kit w/delrin bushings
21. Shimmed steering rack w/ quick steering knuckle
22. Mulholland shocks/springs/sway bars – all Bob Sharp ****
23. Corvette end links
24. Momo steering wheel
25. A lot of stuff to the body including a Porsche 930 Whale Tail, clear headlight covers, blacked out chrome, Z beam headlights, driving lamps in grill, front air dam, etc. – but that would be a “whole nuther” post

My 280Z was also one of the "rare" color combos - Metallic British Racing Green w/Linen interior.
