Default Fuel Leak - Rear Right Tire Well

After filling up at a gas station and getting home, I noticed the strong smell of fuel. I've refused to drive it , for fear of flames and explosions.

After poking around a bit, I've determined that the leak is coming most notably from the rear right tire well, probably the little metal thingy and line in there, anybody know what it is? The smell is definitely -not- coming from the fuel pump or filter area. Unfortunately, the leak isn't dripping anywhere either. Is there a way to investigate the line going from the pump up through the rear right well?

Breather possibly. Take off the wheel back there and remove the pastic shield and have a look.

Mine did the same thing last week. It was leaking somewhere around the fill tube inside the fender and dripping onto the pavement right under the tail light. I think i just over filled it. So now I stop filling when the pump automatically shuts off. What year is your car, Leo?

There is a breather pipe from the top of the tank through the body work and up to the tank at the top of the wheel well, and another connection from the top of the tank filler neck. Depending on your model year, there may be a pipe going forward to a charcoal cannister under the right front fender (late models) or back around the body rear and dumping vapour out a bell mouth behind the bumper cover. In front of ther rear wheel there is a pressure cannister, which can leak if its diaphragm breaks - some have a pipe back to the breather, some dont, just closed by a screw. Early cars also have filter and a second pump in this area....useful to tell us yourmodel year in this area.

Your car appears to be a Euro spec if it is CIS injection then possibly the fuel accumulator is leaking. We stock them. Take off the plastic splash shield in front of the right rear wheel and inspect.....use a flashlight not a match

Yes, when the fuel accumulator dies it starts leaking gas out the top. Easy enough to fix but apparently there are about 3 different versions for 78's, so make sure you get the right one.

I just did mine last weekend and the only problem I had was getting the metal pipe off of the bottom of the accumulator where it runs to the filter. Ended up having to cut the connector off before I could unscrew it.

Not sure if this changed much by '80, but early cars have a second fuel pump in the rear portion of that wheel well, accumulator and filter in the front part of the wheel well as shown in Stephen's pic. Also in his pic, visible just forward of the top fitting on his accumulator, there is a hose that descends from the expansion tank(top of pic) which could be leaking. That tank also has a hose to the rear that connects up with the filler neck at a T fitting -- the other hose on that fitting is the vent that jpitman mentions.

More info here.

Ok, definitely not the fuel accumulator thats leaking. I'm trying to figure out what this piece is called and where I can get one, it's on the back left wall of the rear-right tirewell. It goes from rubber tubing to metallic piping. Here's a pick of where it starts.

The way it looks to be leaking down the side of the tank, I'd say it is the venting tube that vents the top hump in the tank to the section of the tank around the filler neck (post #2). Yep it goes through the chassis wall and you can't see this until you yank the tank.

It sounds like we're talking about the fuel line that connects to the discharge side of the fuel filter (?) (928-356-053-01). Do you have a copy of PET (porsche parts catalog)? It is essential for identifying parts like this. The particular diagram that shows this part is a bit difficult to decipher, as it tries to show about 5 different configurations simultaneously.

BTW, I think you owe Dave $0.50 for using that photo.

you probably have a crack at the top of the gas tank. only leaking when you fill up is the tell tale sign

Do you have a second pump in the tirewell? That line either goes from the first pump outlet to the second pump inlet(NLA) or if you don't have the second pump maybe it goes straight to the accumulator. Roger has the proper hose and EFI clamps in stock to rebuild the hose yourself er you can source the parts elsewhere.

Here is a pic of the hose you mention(I cut it to drop the tank). In this pic it is the two pieces in the right of the frame. It was this hose that caused the drip marks you see in the pic that Leo jacked.

Is the filter under the tank on the '80 cars? I didn't think it was. Oh, and the $0.50 fee is waived for RL members. Leo, I'll PM my address.
