Hi guys, i'm from the 911 fourm so don't flame me too much. Converted my 3.0 to EDIS using a megajolt unit. now waiting for the new COP system out early 2010. so looking for any parts that others have used COP units, wire harness, ect. thanks!

Default 91 GT COP w/ Autronic

Here's a pic of my 91 GT with COP and Autronic. It's been a serious challenge getting things to work but I've got a great electronic tech! The engine was rebuilt with 8.5 compression as a base for a centrifugal SC. It's currently making 285 whp and the new ignition system pulls flat to 6500, no drop off after 6000 like my stock ignition. I'll try to scan a copy of the dyno chart.

Awesome work!!

If that's the car I think it is, I cannot wait to see the next step of this project.

Hey Thats great ,
In the process of converting my GT to a VIPEC unit , if you need any info on the sensors let me know , the sensors are old & superseded . But once set up are very good .

I have gotten a 91 GT running on VEMS with the Cayenne/Carrera GT COP units and it runs well. Though you need to ensure that you can control Dwell during cranking to use these units.

With the Vipec you can control the dwell on up to 8 igntion amplifers , do you have any links too what you vare using , as I intent on using multiple coils as an experiment.

vems.hu is the standalone system we are running. And yes we are running 8 COP units.

Default Autronic ECU

The Autronic unit is amazing with so many features for controlling the coil packs. They are Cayenne units and Todd up in Green Bay has been very helpful in getting them dialed in. As to driving the dashboard sensors its still a challenge. I'm getting all sorts of warnings even though I know they're false. Also, the tach drive is still not working.

You can see in the pic that the #1 lead has a regular wire in place while we were getting the timing set.

More to come as the project progresses!

Any issues with the falling edge of the 5V signal for the Cayenne coils causing multiple sparks? It seems like you have done your homework. I have a set of Cayenne/CGT coils as well, with the plugs. Todd and I have discussed the coils for hours on end after he had them tested. I am glad you found them to be workable. Have you isolated the signal wire in any extra manner?

I don't know much of the details on the connections to the Autronic since my electronic tech did the heavy lifting. I'll see if I can get him to post any detail. I did tell him that with the amount of R&D work he has done there might be some others who would be interested in a summary.

Thanks for the thought on starting a new thread. This project has gone from a WYAIT to almost a ground up restoration.

I think everyone has missed the point of COP. You are doing because you want to. It really boils down to that doesn't it? Remove the technical things, flame fronts, equal length wires, yada yada, yada. You are doing because it is cool, modern and you want the challenge. Right?

Actually there are some good reasons. Detonation prevention being the big one, at least for me. My engine doesn't detonate and I think it's because of the healthy, reliable spark from the COPs.
Looking back at all the other engines I've destroyed by detonation, a weak ignition system is common to detonation problems. I figure that if you find yourself decreasing spark plug gaps to prevent misfire than you have a potential big problem ahead.

Ditching the stock ign system is a huge advantage.

I have used the Cayenne COP units with both VEMS, and now with MSII. If you are planning on using the Cayenne units on either of these systems then contact me and I will tell you some very specific information for their operation.
On both setups I fought with them long and hard to get them to work 100%

I can tell you that they need more than a +5V logic level signal. The reason is that during cranking that drops down significantly more and they will not fire. They also require a MINIMUM of 18mA in the signal feed line or they will not turn on. It is best to use a pullup from +12V with a specific size of resistor in the pullup to ensure the signal is strong enough to fire the coil, but not cook the transistor on the board.

I would recommend using EDIS, or CNP for an install.
