Default Coil on plug ignition

Guys and Gals is there any one out there that has convert their 928s or any other car to COP for that matter? I want to do away with the twin dizzy on my S2 and get rid of the coils too.

The reasons for this are minor really, one is to advance the technology on the engine a to bit more today's standard. The other thing is that it is a high revving engine and this should be a better suited system. I suppose one of the reasons Nascar would like to get away from the distributer is changes in the timing due to the bevel gear. That issue will be gone too.

The total redesign of the intake system, ITBs means getting everything out of the way I can. Weight loss has been a priority for this car, I haven't weighed the disributer but I will, I would have thought it weighs a kilo or so and the coils together probably another.

What do the coils hook up to? Is there any suitable Porsche COP system? I will just be buying an aftermarket system to drive it so I don't need to solve that issue as yet, looking more at options that sit neatly on the plugs. The engine I have is the 2 Valve version.

Thanks Greg

Louie's stroker uses such a system, I have also seen some pics here n the last week of an OB s/c engine with COP.

Try a search...

Brendan in SanDiego i believe is doing something similiar.

Not sure what those guys are using for engine management.

John, could the EZK support coil on plug in any capacity? Or you do run a stand alone ECU or ignition system at the very least

Hi Ryan, I have never investigated this topic, so the short answer is I don't know. If you can tolerate "wasted" sparks, then maybe you could use the 2 coil output of the EZK.

Greg, IIRC COP parts from the Cayenne have been mentioned....

Thanks John, the computer turned up at the relos, so thanks again for that. I just looked at Louie's engine, I don't know much about this topic but is what Louie has COP? I would have thought it is more like a transistorized system? The reason I say that is that it has 2 coils, where what I thought I was looking for was 8 individual coils on each plug. Which maybe should be described as CDI?

I will do some research, still interested in others inputs and experience.

Cheers Greg

Just found this link, thought it might be of general interest.

Haven't had time to read it as yet, any thoughts/comments welcome.

Greg - The cayenne coils/GT coils are perfect for the S4 heads. There is not as much room in the early heads.

I do not know of any but I have thought about this myself. My 2000 LS saturn has COP, When you look at the motor it is a very clean look, no crappy looking spark plug wires laying about. Like someone sugested you could use stand alone ECU for spark only check out megasquirt very affordable ECU's.

I may at some point in the future convert my 84 euro to Megasquirt.

IIRC there is a Chrysler part that fits quite well. The 944 guys discovered it.

Hi Greg

I honestly don't think its worth the trouble and expense...

The whole point of a coil/plug is to produce a good spark , which your twin dizzy system (and mine) does perfectly well...

COP is not going to greatly improve that....

If you want high revs.....well my twin dizzy system with Rev limiter raised (thanks John) has revved to well over 8000...

And take my word you run out of cam and acceleration well before that figure (unless I am using my Nitrous)

John will blow you a chip with a raised rev limit if you ask him

You just need to keep a very close eye on the revs...which is why I have a huge Autometer rev counter (in my eye line) with limit lights that flash at whatever revs I set it for....

I run all sorts of plugs for my Nitrous ..up to BC9ES and have had no worries about spark strength at all....

All the best Brett
