I am trying to find the right alloy alum tig rods. Anyone have an idea where I can find some? thanks

I did it with fiberglass front and back, and well-aged before paint. Its not shrinking after 3? 4 years.

 

Im new and just wondering what is it that your doing cause my moldings seem to show alot of like glue or something around the moldings are you just removing them?

 

Shaving = removing.

In the case of something like the side moldings you'd remove them, fill the holes in the body either by welding them or using fiberglass then finishing and painting.

 

They are affixed with clips through the body, no glue, hatch.

 

I've removed three sets and all three have been double stick taped to the body as well with multiple kinds of tapes - on the same car. It is slow going, with a heat gun, raisor blade, and solvent. (ther is also one bolted connection at the edge of the door under the rubber seal.

The pre S4s have at least two holes for each piece of molding.

 

S4s also. Rod - yours may have been done aftermarket? Lucky!

 

its pretty easy to remove the trims you need some blue painters tape, some WD 40 or PB blaster (preferred) and hair drier /heat gun and some thin mechanics wire or 50 lb test fishing line.
Put the blue tape along the side (up and bottom ) of the trim then spray along the edges of the trim with the solvent, let things sit for about 10 mins .

Remove the nut that hols the trim under the WX strip work one end of the trim loose.
Slide the line/wire under the edge ( have each end of the line connected to something that you can pull on like a spark plug socket.)
( Its best to have a helper here to heat while you pull) Heat the trim in a small section apply more solvent slowly pull the line along the trim keeping close to the surface, the line will seperate the Double stic tape from the door panel and then move on till you have reached the end heating and pulling, This system seems to be the best way to not damage the underlying paint and will also let the trims be reused if that is desired ( dont try to pull the trim away from the door as the trim will bend internally and be permanently damged).
Once the trim is off the panel some compound will remove any trace of the trim edges.

 

The side moldings on my GTS are also applied with tape.

This seems to be so common that it sure seems that at some point the factory began applying the sidestrips with tape rather than thru-bolting to the body.

Anyone know for sure?

 

I know that i like the moldings,this is how this vehicle is ment to be,your destroying the craftsmenship of dr. ing. was he really a dr.?

 

Mine all had the tape AND the through the fender connectors!@!@!#!!!!

Went to an autobody shop today for an estm. 4K to weld, fill, and paint. (that's if I remove the molding).
Painter will not spot paint but feels painting the entire panel is a must. So we're talking about repainting the rear quarter panel, door, and front fender. Yes it's a high-end shop does the best work.

So for me the moldings look pretty good on the car than removed.

yea..I pulled mine a few years back in hopes it would spur me to get them done...nope..nada...eventually ..eventually... I suppose could put some plugs in the holes..make it a 10 footer.. Actually...even with the holes, the 928 looks so much better without those mouldings..
