transaxle swap from 82S to a '88 ...

so yesterday i demounted the transaxle and put in the new one... all fits so far .

- demounting the rear suspension is easy , just need extra hands to hold it as the hole setup wants to tilt to the rear once free on the jack.
( don't forget to demount the ebrake cable inside the car and pull it out )
suspend transaxle with something to the swaybar.
suspend the shafts to the rear suspension , be carefull with the shafts bolts... clean the allen heads and use a good wrench ! They stick hard for that first turn so i can imagine one breaks such bolthead... Mark your allen key so you can see that it is really all the way in the bolts head ....

- the rubber boot over the shiftmechanism is a bit difficult to push it over and back to the rear... loosen the bolt and allen pin , shift the tube out .

- that shiftercoupling sticks to the shaft... some WD40 and turn it with a key to get it loose. ( the front section is square for a bit , there you can place key and turn it a bit up and down...

Once this is away and the inside nut on the clamp , transaxle comes smoothly out with some dancing

Remounting went same way ... no big deal. Just be carefull positioning the inside clamp .The transaxle go's easy in far enough to place the 6 bolts and from there you easy push the 2 flanges together tensioning the bolts bit by bit around.

I had the clamp not good in position ( could not pass the allen head trough the hole ) , so you turn the engine a few degrees on the front balancer nut.

forgot my camera ... will post pics later

oh, some info : the transaxle weights 66 kg.

66 kg?You need a titanium torque tube! ;-) Carbonfiber is a nice choice too!A little R&D and we have 30 kg lost.
My project is a OB(1985)without sunroof with engine, transmission brakes and suspension from a 91 GT.The look must be stock and the goal is 370 HP.
Here in Germany we say"a wolf in a sheepfur!" ;-)

I hope you have a lot of fun first time on the track!

Vey cool project Barry
I swopped in a gearbox from a 89GT into my -81S when I had it, a very straight swap.
You have to post a video with sound when you have the engine running so we can hear the weber on a v8 singing

Red face

Nobody else is going to ask, so I will ...

When you are done, how much would it cost to separate you from this toy

I thought it is not necessary to remove the entire rear suspension to swap the tranny.

yes, on the older types with bolted on batterie box.
Newer ones with welded batterie box you must lower the rear setup.

Now i pushed it out of the way, don't know "how much" you must lower the rear suspension so one could remove the transaxle.... ? but i guess quite a bit....

no big deal that suspension work.... ideal time to clean and eventually renew the swaybar bushings !

and as i told at some points you need a extra help.
