Here is abit of a story for you all.
Earlier this year a 928 owner whom noone had met before introduced himself to some of the other 928 owners at a local PCA event. Who recommended that he contact me and have me work on the car as none of the shops in the area are all that good.
It turned out he had a very late 1984 euro which he was the ORIGONAL owner of the car.
He purchased the car in Holland, and he ordered some very unique things with it. It is a 5 speed, spoiler delete (F&R), and no rubstrip car. It has full leather interior, in a very nice light brown (not sure of color). The dash is also done in this same colour too. Which he claims Porsche refused to do until he suggested signing a waiver. Apparently they had just had a law suit due to someone driving with a similar dash and had a reflection and claimed to have not been able to see out of the car. But it looks stunning.
It does have the dual distributors on it as well. Now the car has been around north america, from top to bottom, about 7 times he claims, and has been on 5 seperate trips back over to europe travelling from england, down into italy.
For obvious reason the car has sentimental value to him.
Well just abit more than 4 years ago the passenger side camshaft broke. I have deduced that the bolt was not torqued properly at the last TB service after which he informed he that he had only about 2000km on it since the service.
Now this is a 10.5:1 CR euro engine, and from all reports he had been given he had cam damage, happened as he was driving at around 2500 RPM.
I told him that I had previously had an 85 euro and when doing the timing belt had confirmed it was not an interference engine. After alot of talking and working out schedules he had the car towed to my place. I immediately cleaned it and tore in to see what I would find. I pulled off the broken cam and housing and used a straight edge and it looked like all the valves were as they should be. I continued to do a leakdown test to confirm that there were no bent valves. I did and even though the engine has been sitting idle for 4 years, and I added NO oil to the cyl leakdown was only 10% in all the cyl, with zero leaking by any of the valves.
This confirms that it is a non interference engine.
I already have a replacement camshaft thanks to Dean Krenz, he build the car that Ken Osage bought.
I have a bunch of parts arriving from Roger tomorrow, including a porkensioner for this car to get it back up and running is proper form!

Mike, Yes the car has been sitting for abit more than 4 years!
I will be flushing the fuel system and will be seeing about getting the injectors refreshed locally.
I should have it up and running in a day, maybe two for the fellow.
And your not kidding about a happy ending. I was not really looking too farward to having to pull the heads off the car and try to find a competent shop in the area and source valves etc!
BTW the owner was extactic about the news of this. Esp hearing it so soon as I had only had the car at my house for around 4 hours when I phoned him, and I had already fixed his dead blower motor too at that time.

Cool story!
Lucky in a way that it was the passenger side, as they usually break on the driver's side.

I received your PM. Can you get me the number off the left cam. If it matches mine I'm interested. It sounds like you have a very nice and rare car in your capable hands.
I was told there is a number stamped on the cam. I don't have a stamping on mine, but the casting number is 928.105.188.0R

Do you know the option code for the front and rear spoiler delete option?
I knew it was possible to do order the car this way but this is the first time I hear of such a car.
Does this car have phone or flat dish rims?
I also thought the reflection problem was the explanation regarding light color full leather dashes.

How did you confirm that your euro was non interference? More of a curious question....and maybe related to rotational forces and valve spring pressures. Perhaps a belt that snaps or a cam nose that shears will not cause the valves to crash since the cam will, under it's valve spring pressure, immediately go to an all valve closed position, whereas the failure when a belt shears the teeth at the crank will hold the cam in whatever position it was last in..thus leading to bent valves?...just some random speculation...as to why some bend valves just by thinking about it..and others seem indestructible..... ![Big Grin](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
BTW...good job saving another 928...It's always nice to hear of one getting back on the road...

Rich, I will get that cam number to you later today.
Tom, to confirm that the 85 euro I had was non interference, I removed the timing belt and rotated the crankshaft. I then set the crank to TDC and rotated both cams, no interference. I did it on this engine as well nothing touched. As to your comment about the cam turning so that all valves are closed, this doesnt happen. At ALL times on one bank there is a valve that is open period. I think why some of them bend valves is due to carbon buildup on the valves and pistons causing interference. Or prior engine work where the head or deck has been shaved.
Nicole, I will get some pictures of the car and put them up for you once it is back together and running, which if the package comes as it is supposed to will be later today!
Samuel, the car currently has phone dial rims on it, and has ES100s on 3 corners, I have already told the owner that he should replace these tires just due to age, the 4th tire is a pirelli and is cracked to hell and loosing air.
