Interesting Colin...I'm going to have to go dig back and see if anyone with a LH Euro motor has had the valves damaged....according to what you're saying there's no way the valve can hit the piston...unless valve float occurs?..or excessive carbon build up?....
maybe the valve crashing is's just a 85 and up US model/S4 engine issue?... Interesting data point nonetheless.

Tom, the only person I KNOW who has had valve damage is Rich with the 1980 euro engine, but iirc he has custom cut pistons. Even with valve float though on this engine no damage would occour as the valves would never open past what the cam can open them, and with the cam opening them to the max they are not hitting the pistons at all.
The only thing that could cause bent valves on these two engines I have tested is eitehr carbon build up, doubt it would take that much, or prior engine work where the heads or deck was machined down.

Was in the garage and snapped a couple of pics, will post them up this evening.

Well here are some pictures as promised.

I have since gotten the new cam and housing installed, and have the FOE torn apart ready for a new timing belt. I also replaced the belt inside the dual distributors as I doubt it had ever been replaced and snapped the moment it was touched as was anticipated.
I have it ready for the Porkensioner to be installed, which will be tomorrow.
I also will be replacing all the old fuel lines in the engine bay, and the injectors will be ready for pickup tomorrow afternoon/evening and I hope to be able to start the car at that time. I need to pick up some hardware as it looks like the shop he had working on the car before was anticipating on pulling the engine and pulled the bolts for the MMs, lower bellhousing, and a few other parts. So I have to get a few odds and sods from the local metric hardware place before firing her up. But if it isnt tomorrow it will be the following day!

So, the spoiler delete option means the air ducts for brake cooling are deleted as well? I thought they were functional...

You know, of course, that the engine to clutch housing bolts are a wierd pitch that I haven't found in a hardware place, right? I think it was M12x1.5?? I ordered some through McMaster-Carr and got them next day for cheap. (my car came with the engine removal started too...).

That is a really cool car! I really like the light dash.

What does the sticker on the ashtrey door say? I bet it's fast!!!!!!!!

The bolts removed are the lower bellhousing bolts. They are M8 x 1.25 thread pitch. Very standard bolt, as is a M12 1.5 thread pitch. It is the length of the bolts you speak of whis are really odd. At least around here.

The sticker on the ashtray door is for the stereo.

I dont see any air ducts for the brakes, which is too bad, but wouldnt really affect you for street driving.

Smuudar, very nice wheels! but you have rub strips :P

Liz,

It is possible Porsche used 83 pistons on this engine? Making this a non-interference design. They did this to a certain number of Autos and manuals even though the engine was a dual distributor 4.7. I had my heads off and my pistons had the deep cut outs. It still has the euro cam, although the compression is lower than what Porsche specified for 84 euros. I called Porsche about this and they apologized to me over the phone. Really.... I just asked them why they would spec the high compression on the 84 engines but used some left over 83 pistons. oh well.

PS: My engine rebuild thread has the serial numbers for the euros with 83 pistons thanks to my friend in OSLO.

Big AL,
Interesting that yours had 83 pistons, I will have to go back and find those serial numbers.
However I find it VERY hard to believe that BOTH the 85 euro dual dizzy, and this 84 euro dual dizzy would both have had the 83 US pistons in them, Esp with how strong that 85 euro that I had ran!
I may just do a compression test once the car is running and warm to see what the numbers are.

But I did not remove the heads on EITHER of these engines and view the pistons, nor do I have a borescope to be able to look into the engine and physically look at the pistons.

I went out today and got a few missing bolts off a parts car the fellow has. As well as got the timing belt on with the porkensioner, and all the coves and accessories. Front crank bolt tightened down as well.
I also put in a new clutch arm bushing as the origonal one was COOKED.
Got it up on all 4s, replacing the fexable clutch line, and bleeding the entire brake system tomorrow.
Will also get the injectors back tomorrow, and get her running, barring any pesky electrical issues.

M12 1.5 is not standard at all. On porsche's yes, but in normal life: not at all. Check out the ISO thread standards.
Standard pitch for M12 is 1.75, 'standard' fine is 1.25. 1.5 is intermediate. It took me a week to find 2 additional clutchhousing bolts for the 944 to mount it to an engine stand. The only place that carried them was a specialised porsche wrecker here... It's just that all porsche shops carry them, but standard, definately not!
