Liz,

Here is the info on the 83 pistons. It was from my friend in Helsinki not OSLO.

Hope this helps.

First engines to get high compression pistons were 0597 for manual cars and 6114 for automatics. First manual car engine number was 0001 and first automatic engine was 5001. This means there were total of 596 + 6113 - 5000 = 1709 '84 MY ROW S made with low compression pistons. VIN 1411 is 1411 - 60 = 1351th ROW car made in '84 MY. Its well within old style piston range. Even if it were not and was infact last made '84 MY ROW its still possible it could have old style engine as engines were not put into cars in any particular order.

Its also possible manual and automatic engines were given new style pistons at different times. This would mean manual or automatic cars with smaller or higher VIN than 1709 + 60 = 1769 could have late pistons. Very large difference in cutoff point isn't likely thought and above numbers give climpse into manual vs automatic car ratio in early part of '84 MY in ROW markets. Abroximately 35% of the production was manual cars.

What is interesting is that there are totally different piston part numbers for '85-86 ROW engines compared to either versions of '84 pistons. For example, looking into standard 97.00mm tolerance group 1 part numbers:

928 103 086 10 '80-84.0
928 103 086 14 '84.5
928 103 093 12 '85-86

This leads me to believe late style '84.5 pistons were just low cut early S piston casting and '85-86 were different style pistons all together.

Other interesting thing is that there are two oversize piston sizes available for both '84 MY styles, 97.50 and 98.00mm. There is only one oversize for '85-86, 97.50mm. '84 ROW S was last engine with two oversizes. After it there was only one size with three different tolerance groups available.

Lizard whats the VIN number on your brown car, mine is WPOZZZ92ZES840717 , I also am not 100% sure if its a non interference engine although I did turn the crank with the belt off and found no resistance and the engine seems to run fine and i have good compression in all 8 .
engine code is M28/22 82E05265

Al,
I found that post by Erkka in your thread earlier today.

Mrmerlin,
According to Erkka, your car is an auto and has 83 Euro pistons indicating it is for sure a non interference engine! The first autos to recieve the high compression were engine code 82E06114 And 82E00597 for manuals. I have not checked the VIN on the car as for this we need to go off of the engine numbers and not the VIN of the car.

Al, I checked the engine code after finding your old thread and found that this engines numbers are

M28/21
82E00454

So if Erkka's info is correct (which I dont doubt) then this means that this engine has the 83 euro pistons with the lower CR. It also means though that very few 1984 euros had LH with only a single ign distributor.

I just popped in to check this post and get the fuse/relay chart for the 84 printed off. I have fresh fuel in it, refreshed injectors in it (they were in suprisingly good shape according to the rebuilders!), ALL new fuel lines. New timing belt, and porkensoner. Also put a new ball on the shift lever arm, and a new braided flexable hose from 928intl that I had as a spares onto the car as the ones that were on there were SHOT.

This car is in need of new brakes as they are worn down, but we can do that once it is fully running.
I can't wait to hear this thing start!

Just got in from the garage,

The owner came out as he had to get some papers from the car. And as he came out I was trying to find out why we had no spark. I had just jumpered the needed relays as the ign switch wasnt doing anything. Well he came we chatted and he was in a hurry to go. So he left I got back at it. Found out that the prior shop that had worked on it had disconnected the ign switch and 1 plug to the instrument panel.
I reconnected them, pulled out the bridges and reinstalled the relays, now,,,,,,,,

ITS ALIVE

It started up INSTANTLY!!!!! I dont have the exhaust hooked up yet, man did it sound mean with open manifolds.

I phoned the owner up and told him the good news and he was extatic! I cant wait to take this thing around the block!

Did the '84 Euro come with an inner and outer fan?

If that's a good paint job and the mechanicals are up to date, a little haggling should get someone a very good deal. That car can probably be bought for the price of a good paint job.

Yes the 84 euros come with the mechanical fan, and the booster fan.

I got the air pump delete belt now, and am just tracking down some of the smaller rad hoses which should be replaced.

Pistons vs entire engine in totally different thing. AFAIK rest of the engine is always twin distributor LH-Jet in all '84-86 ROW 16V. It was just pistons which still remained same until stock run out. Since '84 MY ROW production was 2028 cars its likely early style pistons were used most of the production run even though more engines were made than cars and extras were used as spares.

I'm not sure exactly what style late '84 pistons are. Part number says they are very close to same as Perhaps they will give 10.4:1 CR. In any case its mystery if reported 310hp and 400Nm were achieved with 10.0:1 or 10.4:1 CR pistons. Perhaps it was with 10.0:1 old style pistons. This would definitelly explain reported slightly higher than factory hp numbers achieved with later MY engines.

All else being different means that cams are different between '80-83 and '84-86 engines even though pistons can be exact same. Even though early '84 engines very likely have exact same 10.0:1 (or whatever it is in reality) CR its possible they will bent valves more easily than '80-83 engines due to cams.

There have also been reports of Euro cars here in the US having their cams replaced with US version cams..due to availability....and that's hard to check from the outside of the car...

Erkka I think you hit the nail on the head, that was how I understood it as well (the pistons at least, I don't know about the cams).

I have heard that a while back. A lot of things can happen in 20 or 30 years.

Just figured I would give a slight update to this story.

I have the car running, all fluids in and full, exhaust hooked up.

As I said before car fired up right away but didnt have the coolant system hooked up.

I found while doing the work that the dual distributor, the driving rotor was a tooth off, and the belt was about to break. I replaced it and reset the rotor, and finished hooking everything up. I was on the phone with the owner and started the car for him to hear. He told me that it sounded alot smoother than it did before. And that before it always had abit of a lump to it. :O

Well after having everything hooked up etc. I decided to see what was working.

EVERYTHING on this car is working!!!!
Low brake fluid, low coolant, low oil, low fuel light, fuel guage works fine.
Hell this car has sat for 4 years and even the AC works, I told him to go out and buy a lottery ticket and if he wins I want half :P

Has anyone ever seen anything like this before??

Right now we are just waiting for new brake hoses, pads, and rotors. Once I get them (today or tomorrow) I will release the car back to him (after a quick test drive!). But I can tell you he is one happy owner.

Thanks for the update Colin. This has been fun to follow. I'm not sure what tickled me more; how fast you work, or how well the Euro weathered the layoff. Well done.
