Default Thought it was ominous GTS ping

Was getting what sounded like pinging on WOT thru 4000 rpm. Now it does it any time I accelerate and with windows down sounds more like rattling. Goes away if not accelerating or if depress clutch just a little, but not enough to slip. Guess it's time for some new clutch parts.

if it sounds like pinging then what makes you think its the clutch? I cant think of anything that a clutch could do that sounds like pinging. Especially considering that pinging appears to be a regular occurance on the 5.4L engines.

I would look towards the timing and other engine electricals before wasting time on the clutch.

The reason its ominous, is because its not a once in a lifetime thing, such as a clutch that makes sounds like a pinging 5.4L GTS engine would be

These symptoms sound like you have a broken/missing ball cup on your release arm, so the arm is rattling when there's no pressure on the clutch.

Ryan, that's why at first I thought it was ping. My mechanic took me for a ride, we drove by some building with windows down and it was not ping. Take the slack out of the clutch pedal and the sound goes away.

Hilton, so is that a clutch job anyway to fix the ball cup on the release arm?

Think you can see the ball cup from the top if you remove the air filter and the housing.
Mine had most of the plastic inner liner worn away.

Just replaced one yesterday, and yes, it does make an odd rattle under throttle.

Replace it NOW. You just might have get stuck somewhere as the clutch arm comes off of it. Then the pin from the clutch slave cylinder comes off the arm too.
Then you get no clutch. That would suck.

It's a 10 minute fix BTW, if you have someone with smaller hands.

Lift the car and take out the slave cylinder, pull the pin assembly. Go top side, take off the air box. You (I) can just slide your hand down there on the drivers side. Move the arm towards the passenger side, slide the bushing in the arm and then put the arm back on the ball. You might need to use a long screw driver or pry bar to pop it in place.

Go back under and replace the slave cylinder and you will be good to go.

I'm replacing my ball cup this winter just because I can't imagine a part like that lasting more than 10 years without deterioation. It's such a crucial part of the shift linkage it's not worth messing with. Even if it's not the problem it's worth taking care of.

I'm not sure I can do it Sean's way as I don't know my way around these cars that well, but you can access it by dropping the exhaust from the headers, removing heat shields and there you go.

Ryan, thanks, I am just trying to pin down and eliminate all the 12 year old rattles, squeaks, and noises, then it will be perfect!

My mechanic told me all he checked was that the noise was coming from the bell housing when he had it up on a lift and assumed that meant clutch job even though there was plenty of clutch left. I will call him this morning and see if he is familiar with the ball cup on the release arm thing. I would love for this to be a much cheaper repair than a clutch job, 'cause otherwise I won't be able to make the next Saturday at Andrews or lead the local PCA tour drive to a great little BBQ place a week from tomorrow!

Sounds like your timing belt is about to break. Park the car immediately. I'll be up later today to take it off your hands.

I wish I could, I'd enjoy the respite. Unfortunately, he doesn't drink with amateurs!

Default ping

my 93 gts pinged badly from time to time and was cured with the sharktuner as the car was tuned by the factory to run lean at cruise and part throttle ...the sharktuner has fixed all that and now ping is very infrequent...
just my .o2
thanks
andy
