Locally we had a GTS in which the two M6 bolts that hold the guide tube to the bellhousing came loose, making a rattle like you describe.

It's a 10 minute fix BTW, if you have someone with smaller hands.
Lift the car and take out the slave cylinder, pull the pin assembly. Go top side, take off the air box. Move the arm towards the passenger side, slide the bushing in the arm and then put the arm back on the ball.
Go back under and replace the slave cylinder and you will be good to go.

Holy Crap!! You can do all that in 10 minutes???? It takes me more than 10 minutes to break out the porken bars and jack up the car. Hell it takes me 10 minutes just to pull the car in the garage and go get a beer so I can contemplate the job properly.

Sounds like just taking it all apart and replacing the two bearings, measuring for friction disk wear, and making sure the clamp bolts etc. are all tight is a good way to go.
I vaguely recall Andrew Olson had a thread a year or two ago about his clutch job that had a rattle.. might be worth doing a search?

LMAO, I already had the car in the air. So 20 minutes if you factor in that. It was at 9am, so beer, as good as it sounds, would not have been a good thing.
