Default Does Metallic Silver have a clearcoat?

Does Metallic Silver (paint code 980) 1987-1990, have clearcoat?

I have a spot on my rear bumper cover that looks dingy, about 4"x 4" round.

I've been hesitant to buff on it because I'm worried it might be damaged clearcoat.

It is the original paint...

Metallics have clearcoats on them. If the paint appears worn through then I would also be hesitant to buff any more, otherwise you should be able to polish out any swirls without wearing through your clearcoat. Can you take a few pictures of the area and post here....

Also what products do you have available to you?

I've already tried to take pictures and it's not bad enough to show up on the photo.

I was thinking about using 3M imperial hand glaze on the spot to see what happens.

A glaze won't really correct the paint, it will only fill the scratches/oxidation with oils. It will improve the look but only temporarily. Give it a try, it won't hurt. What else do you have available?

I've got a mothers Clay bar. That really didn't work.

I've gotMeguiar's Cleaner Wax, Mequiar's Scratch X swirl and oxidation remover. Havn't tried these...

and One Grand Blitz Wax. which I normally wax the car with...

Try the Scratch X but start of gentle and work harder if you see improvement.

If it appears that the clearcoat is failing or has already failed then it won't help but otherwise you should get good results. Follow up with One Grand Wax after Scratch X.

Does it look like there's a halo around the edge of the spot?

Metallic Silver is notorious for having the clear coat disintegrate. A common problem on other marque's as well.

Yes, so I'm pretty sure the clear is toast. It cleans up pretty good but with a light buffing but a few days later it starts being noticeable again.
