Its actually quite simple when you sort through all the difficulty explaining it. It would be easier still to explain if I knew which direction was which on the diagrams (e.g. which motor is U/D vs L/R and which polarity is U/L)
There is quite a lot if info there in those mirror posts. Not all of it at all useful unfortunately.
Andy Evangelidis's write up is very good on the mechanicals & dealing with S4 to Aero electrics. He notes '90/'91 only but his instructions are valid for '87-'91 vehicles. He covers the wiring for a memory mirror config - not all cars were configured for memory and will then have fewer connections (still OK but should be noted).
The other wiring mapping diagram are much more problematic...
Lets take the '80-'84 version:
It ignores memory on the mirror because these years didn't have it - fine.
Lets just take the motor on the RHS its RED wire is connected to Brown on the car side which also goes to the heater element. As you might expect this is actually a real ground. So the motor always has ground on one side - ergo it can only move in one direction unless we invent a negative supply (there isn't one). This one doesn't work folks - I'm stopping there. The other plane of movement will work - half a solution at best.
On the '85-'86 it shows the same thing ground (brown) to the motor feed Red - same exact issue. Half solution.
Why there is an '86-'87 diagram by the same person baffles me... wasn't '86 already covered...? ('86.5 has the same mirrors) also '87 is totally different using new mirrors with a different configuration and different car side wire colors (already like the Aeros - so see Andy's write up instead).
So all in all - apart from Andys helpful S4 write-up - very misleading and unfortunate that its published... I wonder how many owners followed this religiously - failed to get it more than half working and blamed themselves...
So don't believe everything you read in the internet... even though this looks quite plausible - at first...
As I noted the old style mirror switches aren't capable of driving 2 independant motors directly - they assume a solenoid will change the movement plane - to mimic this you need a relay to change the electrical connection between the planes. Since with a relay we don't need a physical connection at the mirror motors we can get by with one at the switch Vs. one in each mirror since only one mirror moves at a time.
However any solution with the original switches and no relay just won't work...

The missing relay you show in that pic looks like the one that was missing on my car as well. It's the buzzer/seatbelt light relay. I put mine back in and I'm thinking the previous owner was right to pull it.

My dash resting in other hands tonight I'll keep my fingers crossed. They told me they used the wrong leather on it, mis-stitched and never filled in the dash before recovering. I have a price of $450.00 and was very insistent about what I expected. My friend did his seats there and they came out great.
I have a complaint into Visa I'll see how that works out!

I'll let you know how I make out on the mirrors I do appreciate the help. It's on the bottom of my list but the bottom is rapidly coming up. Don't tell my wife I want to drive this a little while before she gets it and with out mirrors it very dangerous
