Since I am into this car I though I would like to put all in one place all my ridiculous questions and progress reports. :)

I need to change the oil pan gasket and it has headers on it, I am struggling to remove my top starter bolt but having the headers off would be very helpful.
Do I need to remove these for the gasket change?
Has anyone had the glory of removing headers seems like a real pain and do the gaskets need to be replaced and if so will the standard ones fit?

Cam seal question; Roger says there is a almost see through gasket the sits inside of the cam. I can't see one I guess it's invisible to me. Can I get at it from the front or do the covers need to come off or should not worry about it.

See through? Can you say a little more about that?

There is a front seal, rubber O'ring on the rear of the inside cam and some sort of really thin clear ring that goes over the cam. I do not see it but it is suppose to be there.

Got the oil pan dropped enough to "try" to place the gasket on without removing the sub-frame. I have a total of 4-shorter oil pan bolts does anyone know where they go?

Whats on your agenda today Mark?

According to the WSM you should have 5 short bolts. All it says it " install at depressions of the pan ". So look for the depressions and try to find that 5th short bolt.

Interesting. How easy is it to change oil pan gasket without dropping the front crossmember?

Tampa 928s 09-07-2008 12:23 PM

Just for the record:
The four small bolts go under the frame on the oil pan.
You can install a rubber gasket with out dropping the sub-frame

That's awesome. So how did you access the pan bolts above the cross member?

I used the 4x4 wood lift and brought it up a few inches gives you enough room to get all the bolts on and off!

Fabio421 09-07-2008 03:11 PM

So you loosened the motor mounts to raise it up those few inches?

This is what I used to pull the motor up a few inches!
Steering rack is next on the list!

You have a 1500 square foot garage with a lift yet you don't have a proper engine hoist? Thats awesome :)

for the cam seal there is either an O ring that goes into the cam pulley sleeve (the part that slides over the end af the cam and the pulley rides on) or there is a clear plastic washer that slides between the sleeve and the boss on the cam to seal the sleeve. The 944 engine also has similar pieces of clear plastic I am not 100% sure that this is what you have but some kind of seal needs to be between the sleeve and the cam otherwise it will leak when things get hot. The clear plastic washer is only about the thickness of a piece of paper and if you get a seal KIT sometimes they wont even bee seen as they are clear. I would check the PET and see if it call one then check the 944 pet and see if it has a similar part

Well I checked the PET and it shows a seal for the 944 but not the 928??? 944 P/N 944 105 321 00 Since the cam housing is similar it would stand to reason that the 928 should have a similar part , I would figure that this part would also work on a 928 but a side by side comparo to cam snouts would be best.. If you dont get the seal then you could try and face the surface of the sleeve where it meets the cam use some 1000 grit and oil on a flat surface, maybe there are burs on the sleeve
