Real Porsches don't drink water
There's a guy in my neighborhood with some fascinating cars - a 1910 Model T, a 20's Model A, a 30's V8 Cadillac, an MGTC replica and a real Avanti. Well the other day I was driving around troubleshooting my hot issue and he was in the driveway, so I pulled in to tell him just how much I liked his cars. We chatted for a while and he even offered my daughter a ride in the 'T' which just has her over the moon, really nice guy. Even offered to help me if I couldn't find the problem. Then he hits me with that, saying he only liked the 356's and early 911's. I mean, the only reason I pulled in was to compliment him on his cars.

The 928 is an acquired taste, not everyone has the wisdom to appreciate these cars. It was really the first car Porsche designed from the ground up with no outside (VW) influences.
Guess you could have hammered back at him that you only liked Packards, but then you would be lowering yourself to his level!!

I don't think he meant anything by it. Sounds like he was a nice guy, and was simply giving you his personal opinion. I would not take it personally.
Remember it takes all kinds to keep the hobby strong. Would you go out and buy a Model T? - Probably not, but I am sure you would use that same $$$ to buy a nice GTS! - See my point? Different strokes...just appreciate each other's tastes and learn from one another...

Some people can't help giving their opinions out of ignorance, he probably has no 1st hand knowledge of what a 928 is all about. You should have offered HIM a ride your your shark, then educated him.
We were at a PCA drive event that the Jaguar club was also invited to. Only one Jag owner showed & he was older & very nice. There was a gent there that I didn't know, thought perhaps he was another PCA member. I realized later that he was with the older gent & then I thought was also a Jag owner. While about 20 cars waited in the parking lot staging area, he was among several looking at my wife's shark.
Since I thought at the time he was a fellow PCA member or Jag owner, I tried to be pleasant to him as he gave a few less than flattering opinions & incorrect info about 928s in general. I took a breath & played along, trying to be gracious in my replies. He said things like only the 911 was a true desirable Porsche to own, that only they kept their resale value. That only 911s had a timeless look to them & how "these cars" look so dated in comparison to a 911.
By the time the conversation was over, I realized several things. He thought it was a 944 & he didn't even own a Jag, said he drove an Infinity G35. He also went on & on about how great his car was, comfortable, very fast,(as quick as many Porsches in fact!) I did compliment his G35, said they were nice. After a while, I'd had enough of him spewing his misinformation in front of other PCA members.
One of my last replies to him was nicely & matter of factly letting him know that THIS CAR is a 9-2-8. That the 928 was the flagship of the Porsche line. That it has a 5 liter V8 & that it was designed to cruise the Autobahn in comfort at 140 mph & that most 928s could still do so today! That the original sticker price on a 1991 928 way back 17 years ago was in excess of $70k. And that was about $20k more than the same year 911 & almost double what his current modern car cost him! He just looked at me like I was from Mars!

You guys...
So what? He is entitled to like what he likes. I didn't read where he said they were worthless POS bastard children. With his small collection of cars, I am sure he appreciates all cars and it was stated he was a real nice guy to boot.
Your reading too far into it. Some folks like chocolate, some like vanilla...

Yes he was a very nice guy and like I said, offered to take my daughter for a ride in the T which is an amazing machine, looks like a self-propelled stagecoach. And he does like Porsches, just is more of a traditionalist...obviously by looking at his collection. I just got a little irritated when I was completely complimentary about his cars and I got one comment from him on mine. And I did bring up the V16.
By the way, he's getting ready to sell the Avanti and a late-80's Corvette convertible. That Avanti is just beautiful, but doesn't really fit with his other cars, no idea why he has the Corvette.

I actually had a Mustang guy comp my car the other night. "Nice 944" and I kept my mouth shut. Although I had a couple Mustang jibs and jabs at the ready! Besides I'll take Jackie Stewart's and Al Holbert's as well as anyone who performed a professional automotive review's word over these types any day.
