+1 I have tolerance for these opinionated people because I was once of the same mind:" the only true Porsche was air cooled and rear/mid-engined". Until I got my 928. I have had many such opinions until I stepped out of them and tried what I had been condemning. But of course, when I was a kid I knew it all, right? And my way was the ONLY way. Sure. Right.

The Model T he has is worth it, a very early "open" model without a roof, white with high-rise bucket seats and wooden wheels. It really looks like a horse-drawn buggy, just without the horse. It's the Avanti that draws me, original 60's model with wire wheels, round headlights and chrome bumpers. But my wife would kill me if it ended up in my garage.

And here's the flip side. I was getting in the car to drive home yesterday afternoon and one of the guys I work with (drives a 350Z convertible), drove by, stopped and backed up to chat a second. "Wow I haven't seen one of those in a long time, looks fantastic!" Cars are fun, no matter what you drive.

Even the model T and A are water cooled. There have been very few air cooled cars over the last 100 years.

I am coming off my "928 chip-on-the-shoulder" attitude and I am liking a lot of other cars. But I still don't understand in 2008 to have a rear engined 911...

He's not a dick, we all sometimes are a little more honest and a little less sensitive. He is correct (for his era, which was my dad's era) .... real Porsches DID run air-cooled. Real Porsches DID have chrome. Real Porsches DID have rear engines. Then the 70's rolled around.

So cut the old guy some slack ... from his perspective the thing that sets Porsches apart is aircooled rear-engined.

Neighbor sounds like a nice guy, but not truely aware of the Porsche dynamics. You might want to remind him that now all modern Porsches are water drinkers Air cooled Porsches are a thing of the past

What keeps all the auto manufacturers in business is the idea that there are many differing needs and tastes among folks when you talk cars. Can't criticize folks who don't share my opinion, any more than they can be critical of mine. I have owned several air-cooled Porsches. I grew out of the habit.

Seems to me he only confirms what his car park already states - he likes old cars.
Your 928 is too new and modern, and thus will not fit in his idea of what is a desirable car.

Wasn't this a nice guy with just different taste - and perhaps not the social skills that would make him a good diplomat to send to Sweden to negotiate.

That said, I would not have a T if you throw it after me.

when someone tells me they would rather have a 911 then a 928 i just look at them strange and say hmmm i think i would rather have the car that was made right and better to replace the old 911s after hearing that they usually start to question me as to why its better and i just tell them well every year it was made its was the top of the line for porsche why wouldn't i want the best (with a big grin) oh the 911 boys hate that
