Default Crank gear drift removal ?

I have been trying to get this out for 30 min, used blaster, vice grips, needle nose and screwdriver and hammer. This must come out somehow I just don't know the how!
Now I know why they call this labor day!

Not sure if there's room, but can you get a small gear puller on the crank pulley and pull it the work on the square key removal?

Gear moves it's the pin that is stopping it from coming off!

Try tapping the pin in a little further, then pull the gear over it. The keyway has a angled groove shape and the key is probably riding up preventing the gear from coming off.

that looks pretty messy I would tap the gear back to the block then tap the keyway into the crank then take a small file or a small stone and check for burs on the keyway there is a chance that the keyway is riding too far out of its slot or it has been slightly mushroomed or otherwise nicked. you will have to destroy the rear thrust flange to use a puller, careful of the plastic housing this can also break

The keyway groove stops where you have the key, so there is no way to pull it, no place for it to go, as long as the gear is there. Take Stan's advice and smooth off the nicks in the key, tap it back in as far as it will go, and pull the gear over the key. This is the reverse of installation, the key goes on first and the gear goes over it.
Good luck

Mine did the same thing. If you have the flywheel locked or the car in a high gear you can take a punch and gently drive the gear backwards to its normal rotation. This will free it up and you can remove it. If you have a brass or aluminum punch you should use it so you don't damage the teeth. onceyou remove the gear you should be able to easily remove the key.

I'll try that Shawn, the question I have is do I need to remove it at all. The tensioner is empty which would account for the oil, I hate to take things apart for no reason.
P.S. how's you car going?

I assumed you needed to remove it because you asked. What are you trying to do? That area is greasy looking so maybe you want to change the crank seal while you have it torn down. Thats why I removed mine.

Mine is almost back together. It would be done today but I have a cookout to go to as soon as my ribs are finished.
