That tape is great. However, although it may resists tearing, it is very stretchy and would probably just balloon out, and since it only sticks to itself, I think it would become useless pretty quickly at preventing splits and subsequent leaks.

George,

Looking at that picture, it looks like the split (or splits) started right at the edges of the clamps. I know mine are cranked down tight too, but maybe you are pinching/tearing the rubber with the edge of the clamp. Maybe a different type of clamp with rolled edges, or even line the surface under the clamp with something like the tape Andrew posted.

Mine is still the original (knock on wood fast!)and boosted in street form for 4 years or so, but I guess a replacement is probably in order this winter. I'm curious to see what you come up with as a solution.

It would be worth a try IMO since the elbow isn't reinforced. Maybe that's not the exact tape you need, but I swear if you look at those silicone hoses the turbo guys use, they're wrapped in some kind of tape. Even if it baloons, maybe it'll keep it from popping and afterall, that is the goal.

Andrew I think they want something that they can be SURE will work. It is real expensive and takes a lot of effort to get ready and go to an event only to DNF with a minor parts failure. Especially when you KNOW it is marginal at best.

The rear turbo guys split a MAF boot almost exactly the same way....They are looking for a silicon boot that will replace it...

Once again, I have a fix but it requires modifying the MAF and is considerably more expensive than a replacement boot.

Well duh! Of course they want something that will work.

I have no idea if my little tape idea would work or not - but it's beeter that just putting the same old boot on and I'm quite certain less expensive than a custom elbow. I was just throwing out an idea of how to reinforce the the boot. Maybe I hit the nail on the head, or maybe someone takes my idea a step or two further.

No matter the solution, they would be wise to throughly test it before they go racing agian.

Therein lies the problem. The failure was after 60 miles at speeds averaging 165 or so with extended bursts very close to 200. A little hard to find a suitable test site around here.

A quick update. I finished the editing on the 2 video clips. I added voice commentary to both and speed
info to "The Gap" video. The URLs are the same as before:

http://928.jorj7.com/2008-pony/103/2...-Speed-Run.wmv
7.7 mb wmv file of the 1st speed trap

http://928.jorj7.com/2008-pony/103/2...ny-The-Gap.wmv
21.5 mb wmv file of the run through "The Gap"
