Heinrich -

I just had a bad thought.

Ross called me shortly after you posted and let me know he was approaching "Idaho Falls." I'm pretty sure he said Idaho Falls.

It wasn't until we hung up that it struck me - I sure hope he meant to say Twin Falls. If he's heading to Idaho Falls, he took a wrong turn and is heading north again.

I tried to call him back but just got his voice mail. If you have a way to reach him, would you make sure he's heading in the right direction?

I'll try to get his charger from the motel today. It won't do him any good now, but I'll try to get it to him whenever he reaches his destination.

Fear not, our intrepid adventurer is holed up safely in one of Provo, Utah's finest lodging establishments for the evening. Other than a dump truck incident (no paint swapping or pavement sliding to report, thankfully) we've had essentially smooth sailing since the run in with Oregon PD. Good work Ross~

I spent some time with Ross today. He seems to be traveling a leetle on the slow side.

He spent Wednesday night in Boise, ID and only made it to Ogden, UT by late Thursday night. That's about 270 miles in a day.

Today, he only made it from Ogden, UT down to Provo. That's a mere 70 miles.

He rolled into Provo a little before 5:00. I filled up his tank for him and took him to my favorite Mexican place for a meal. By then it was maybe 5:45. I asked him if he wanted to keep riding, but he wasn't feeling real good and just wanted to call it quits for the day.

I had been expecting him Thursday night and had arrangements made for him to stay in my home. However, tonight I had been invited to a get-together and dinner at some friends, so I couldn't spend any time with him.

With that in mind, I decided to put him up at a Marriott Fairfield just off the freeway. We discussed his route for tomorrow. Because of Gustav, he's taking a more northern route and will be heading for Denver from here.

But he's gotta make a little better time. He has to be home in Florida by Sep 4.

Maybe he is savoring the experience and seeing the sights. Theres nothing wrong with that. I have driven from FL to CA once and my o nly regret was that I didn't do it more slowly.

Ride on Ross! Stay safe.

I think Ross is finding that 70 miles on a GSXR is like 1000 in a 928.

Sorry to hear about the dump truck incident. He should watch out for flying hay bails in Nebraska. I had to dance around them as they fell off a truck on my x-country motorcycle trip.

When I picked up my GT from Montrose, Co, I drove through the Rockies at night in the snow with one headlight to Co. Springs and couldn't see a damned thing around me. I'm sure I missed some incredible scenery. I've thought about making the same drive again someday in the daytime just to see what I missed.
Don't get in too much of a hurry Ross, you'll probably regret it. Maybe you'll get to have fun playing dodge the tumbleweeds in Kansas.

I've done 650 mile days on a sportbike, took a while to have full feeling back in my hands. A throttle lock is a good thing, failing that you can pop neutral and coast a while and flex/stretch your hands and wrists. Stopping every 100 miles or so, even if you feel OK, is good too. Stop, stretch, get a quick drink of water and get back on the bike. A 5-10 minute break every 100 miles prevents a meltdown after 300 or 400, and you can still do 600 miles in a day easily. More even, if you need to. Getting in 60-100 miles before breakfast and likewise after dinner helps eat up the miles too.

Good luck,
-Joel.
