I've been riding bikes ever since I was 4 years old, I wouldn't buy a bike if I didn't know what i was getting into. Magnetic tank bag? I plan on buying a tank bag but don't know anything about the magnetic types?

Your confidence is admirable. They have this thing called the Ironbutt.

No one has ever entered it on a Gixer. You are about to find out why.

If you make it without permanent paralysis, I vote we change your Rennlist name from Whitefox to Aluminumbutt.

You know you have my sincerest wishes for a safe, painless trip.

I had an 87 Gixer 750RR for quite a while. It was a real fun bike...for about 100 miles.

I don't mean to discourage you. This trip will be an authentic adventure you will always remember.

If your trip takes you through Mid Missouri ie Columbia off I 70 and you need a place to crash let me know. We have a spare bed, hot food, a 928 in the garage and a pool table in the basement.

They come with big magnets sewn into thick winged pads that hug the tank. They come with (at least the two types I've bought) an extra fixed safety strap that you can just throw away... these bags don't budge even at speed or any sport touring conditions and i've used them for years. Then when you park, you just lift it off the bike and fold the flaps over so they stick together and off you go with a carbon-fibre look briefcase. I'd get one with plenty of pockets, a map cover if you don't have gps, a usb port / ipod jack, and i like the wider ones that can fit 8.5x11 size papers so you can use it for commuting. And when you;re not riding with it you don't have extra plastic straps hanging from the frame around the tank. I've had the strap-on (hehehe did i just say strap-on) kind too with plastic tank bikes and i much prefer the magnetic kind. Never had the magnets interfere with any of my electronics either if thats a concern.

That editor from Motorcyclist (Aaron Frank) completed an Iron Butt on an R1 a few years back and they took the award away when he wrote about his high speeds, wheelies and lack of sleeping... How lame is that, he actually pulled it of on a sportbike and then they go and say he was too irresponsible... this coming from guys who stay awake for days on end riding a big lazy-boy with 2 wheels with chronic sleep deprivation saying he was riding irresponsibly. That still bugs me, i'm not sure i like those Iron butt guys after that.

Whitefox, change the title of your thread, include Seattle and your home city so folks in those areas can spot your thread without having to reading it to find out where you're going.

x 2 on the ear plugs. If you've never tried it, you won't believe the difference in the fatigue factor. It goes way down. First few miles are wierd, after that, you're good to go.

Consider a camel back, you're gonna be sweating at times, and at any speed, even if its not hot, you're gonna be losing fluids. You won't believe the difference with the camel back too. If having it on your back is annoying, put it in the tank bag. Clip the hose up by your neck so you don't have to fish around for it at speed.

Whitefox, send me a pm and I'll send you my contact info. I'm outside of Seattle if you need anything.

How are you set for gear? I have some stuff I never use anymore, and gear from a buddy too. Rain gear, gloves, etc. If you're a big guy (6' 190 lbs+), it'll fit. Let me know if you need anything, and its yours for free.

And work is crazy for me right now, but if you need anything I might be able to meet up with you after work. -Ed
