I just drained the tank on my 82 been sitting a few years pump had black goop in it. I want to take apart my sender unit and I need to remove the black cap and not sure how to do this. Is there a way to get it off looks like three tabs but seems they will break if I try to move them!

Do you mean the big cap holding the sender into the tank top? once you remove the wiring plug and the fuel return line, LARGE channel locks or even two crossed screwdrivers will undo it and release the sender. Sometimes the bottom catches on the reservoir in the bottom, and it might take a bit of juggling to get it free - try to keep it very straight and vertical. Find the write up here by Sharkskin on cleaning the insides of the sender, says it all with pics. You will need a new gasket/rubber seal when you replace it.

Small central nut on the bottom of the unit off, then wriggle tube off the top plate will expose the central rod and the wires. Clean VERY carefully to remove shellac etc. Max resistance on mine was ~ 80 ohms , float at bottom. check warning light circuit also. See Sharkskin web page for pics, very useful.

Well this what happens when you don't drive your car for 2 Years!
This is the one I just purchased, any idea what else to do before I try to start this?
I have a pump coming from Chassis Research and a new filter do you think I sould remove the fuel line and blow it out with Tyrolean?

Uggg, I had that sender apart when I had the tank out and cleaned it and it looked really nice.
I added fuel injector cleaner to the tank when I put it back in and it would have been a pretty high concentration since there was only about a gallon of gas. Maybe the cleaner probably has some pretty harsh chemicals which corroded the sender when it sat.
Damn, I should have thought of that.

I have blown out the fuel line from the motor back, replacing the inside and outside filter and pump. I pulled the plugs added a little Marvel Mystry oil waiting on the pump. Plugs looked a little soaked so I need to clean those also.

Many people with dubious fuel systems put gas in the tank, and Berryman's cleaner stuff, and jumper the pump relay and let it run for some time - ie an hour or more, to flush the crud into the filter. I did this with mine after a tank replacement, and some new fuel lines, as a leak check, and to ensure the system was fully primed. K-Jets dont start well on dry empty lines, they take a LOT of cranking to fill everything. Anyway, after a 10 minute pump cycle, it fired up first try.
