New 928 owner post!
Picked up my 1987 S4 Auto with 65K miles in LA last week and wanted to provide a few details. I’m the fourth owner, the last two put about 7K since late 2005. I don’t have much info on the first owner except the original 5 years of dealer maintenance and that he/she lived in Las Vegas. The PPI was excellent and the seasoned 928 mechanic (he grilled me to make sure I knew the maintenance required on a 928 before I purchased!) said it was one of the top one’s he’s looked at. With the exception of the 17” GTS C2 Turbo Wheels (Kumho Ecsta Supra tires), the vehicle is stock. The color code is L36P (Veneziablau Metallic) and the interior is black with light grey leather seats. The seats, dash and center console are in perfect condition. I’ve got a few items on the project list:
Hatchback remote release alignment is off (motor works fine)
Fuel pump whine (not sure if it’s pump, filter or both)
A/C has small leak and blows cold for 10-15 min before gradually getting warm (experienced this on the trip up from LA with 95+ temps, no problems here in Seattle so far)
Fuel gauge not reading accurately (1/4 tank off)
Driver mirror goes up/down but not left/right
Rear tire clearance on left is ½ inch, right is 1 inch (no tire impact, but this seems tight)
Rennlist helped educate me on the car and the pre-purchase gotcha’s. Thanks to everyone on this forum!

87 was a good year for 928's IMHO. Very nice indeed...

Sounds like you have a failed hot water valve - either the vacuum control for it or the valve itself - in this case when the engine warms up the heater box temp counteracts the cooling from the evaporator... probably an easy fix...
Do the airflow flap positions work (footwell/defog vents) if no its probably a HVAC system vacuum issue - if this looks ok ->
The hot water valve is under the air filter box - pretty easy to access - determine if the actuator moves with vacuum - and also see if you have vacuum switching on the line that feeds it (when running). Or you can simply try tying it closed (the non-default position) wit a ziptie and see if that fixes your warm air issue...

Welcome aboard Steve, nice ride for sure.

That is a very nice looking car. I also have an '87 S4 auto.
I also need to re-align my rear hatch remote release motor. Is there a link for this?
My gas needle is off 1/4 tank as well.
