Hey Tony,

I'm actually using the WSM, which like for any other operation, is a mess until you find all the correct sections and then can re-look at them in proper order.
I actually tore mine down in a different order, but for the sake of not further confusing things, I reenacted lots of teardown in the same order as the WSM provides in Volume III Section 37-144. To be honest, I removed the valve body and all of the piston covers with the tranny still mounted in the car, and the car on the lift. Much easier than wrestling with the tranny on the ground. I think the diff removal would also be more difficult with the tranny on the ground, but JMHO.

If I use any references outside the WSM, I'll post them. I had a couple MB manuals, which were either on the Morehouse disc or referenced on a thread here on R-list, I don't recall. I used them to primarily familiarize myself with the valve body internals just because I couldn't find the location of the info in the WSM. There is a good section on splitting the valve body at Vol III 38-123, but I still haven't found (haven't looked real hard either) the exploded view that the MB manuals have of all the springs and valves pulled out the sides.

Yeah, I'd definitely rethink polishing the tranny next time , but now that its torn down to the bare cases, you'll be able to brush your teeth in the reflection by the time I'm done.

This makes me want to buy another 928 so I can take apart the one part I haven't - the Auto trans!

Here are some links to information I found last year when I overhauled my S4 Auto for no reverse. Don't asked me how I came across these (one site appears to be hosted in Russia!) because I have no idea, but the information provided is very good and I found it more comprehensive than the WSM. Good Luck!

Thanks for chipping in Glenn, that second one is COMPLETELY comprehensive. What a great resource.

Your welcome Adam. I basically ignored the Porsche WSM once I got the unit out of the car and into the O/H, almost exclusively using that second one for reference.

This was also a great resource:

http://www.mercedesshop.com/shopforum/

I hung out there when I was having some shifting issues on my '86.5 and found some great information that helped.

I will dig up any other links that might be useful too and post later.

Some more:

http://www.europeantransmissions.com...cat=653&page=1

This is where I got my O/H kit from, pricing was good and quality was decent.

Here is another good site for all parts/tools/kits related to the Autos:

http://www.bulkpart.com/Merchant2/me...ory_Code=722-3

They sell the shift kits too.

I can understand about the WSM, it really is worthless compared to the MB manuals that are out there.

I've registered at the mercedesshop website last week but haven't received a password yet, hopefully soon. They do have a lot of good sources there.

Default Back to our regular scheduled programming...

Before proceeding there is some little stuff that needs to be removed on the bottom of the tranny case.

NOTE: I did my teardown in a different order then provided in the WSM. For the purposes of this thread, I'm putting it in the order of the WSM teardown. I already had the internals removed before I removed these next few bits, but the WSM has you removing them first, so all of the drums and mainshaft would still be in the tranny at this point. They are missing in my photo's because I already had removed them. I've deleted the removal of the B2 pressure unit which was originally posted here and put it later in the thread as it would be impossible to remove at this juncture since the B2 brake band would still be in place.

First is the oil deflector which is located in the center front portion, right behind the bell housing. It releases by pulling back and up.

Moving to the right we have the temperature reactor.

Moving straight back there is a centering pin that pull straight out.

Moving left there is a plastic insert. I couldn't get it at from the top so I accessed it through a hole in the back of the case.

Then, moving forward slightly, we have the one way vavle.

My first casualty, the breather cap. For orientation purposes, the top of the tranny case is to the left.

Pinch the barbed end together on the inside of the case, and push outward.

Dang it.

Might I suggest you get a better camera for documentation?

Just sayin'...

I here ya, I will for the assembly.

Don't think the wife would be too happy having the new camera smell like ATF, she doesn't care what my phone smells like.

I think if you find the macro mode, and use some optical zoom instead, this will let you hold the camera further away and allow for much better pictures.

Don't think that's an option, its a Treo 700wx. I think all I've got is a two stage digital zoom.
