Default Water Pump Failure

Have you seen any pump failures? What failed?

didn't we have this thread already?

the impeller came loose from the shaft on mine. So loose it fell on the ground when I took the pump off. It was an eBay-sourced rebuilt pump installed by my PO. It lasted just over 1000 miles before failing.

Heinrich,

Here's one not listed. Apparently at this race, John Veninger had the pulley walk off the FRONT of the shaft at Summit Point. I was there and took the pics.

https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...ferrerid=45339

If you read the thread you'll see the rest of the WP felt nice and tight to him at the time, it was spinning nice and smooth, but the pulley worked right off the front and burned through the cover.

John V.: I'm sorry if this is painful for you to see again, but hopefully some good will come of it.

damn that is ugly. again .. a shaft-related failure. not a packae failure ... I am interested in learning just how many package failures we've seen since honestly the other thread was the first time I had heard of such a thing.

I pulled one last Saturday on which the pulley moved forwards and the impeller backwards (Veninger Failure Mode)
I've pulled at least three that were leaking at the shaft.
I've pulled at least two because the bearing was wobbly (but that might have been due to other worn parts and/or over-tension.)
I've pulled at least two plastic impeller water pumps that exhibited signs of under-rotation (no visible movement of WP bits, but warm engine temps cured with a replacement WP.)

Haven't seen one yet... but then I'm not replacing it until it gives me a fit.

Ive had the leaker, the bearing noise maker, the impeller comes off version, and with scot, the impeller moved in toward the engine failure. I even replaced one a couple of years ago as it was making a funny sound.

Add to the list water pump freezing up, usually takes out the timing belt. I've seen this as well as the impeller coming off and grinding into the block.
Also had one that was a slow leak until one day I found a large puddle of coolant under the car. I just pulled off the old pump and tossed it, so I have no idea where the leak was (shaft, gasket etc...).

This seems like a total waste of time as we have already got this thread going and collecting the needed data.
Glad I spent all my time trying to work this issue out - yours pissed - very!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I already have the above failures in the data - nothing new here.
If you wanted to run with this is would have been nice to talk about it first.

Heinrich,
I will forward all the data to you and also send you the contact info for the engineering people at Laso and GPM so as we do not waste each others time any further. GPM are ready to talk this week as I could not talk with them as I was in Europe for the last two weeks.
Please post all your findings so we can learn from the data.
Roger

FWIW, DEVEK had a plastic impeller come loose on a rebuilt WP in the White Car and fried the motor. Mark Kibort had one do the same thing on the Holbert Car but caught it before it overheated.

H,
If you took the time to read the thread you would have seen that all these questions had already been asked.
I look forward to hearing your conclusions and glad you are taking up the challenge so I can move on to something else.
As I say I will pass all the info already collected and sent to me and forward it to you.
Do you want any of the disected pumps?

Come on Roger .. last time when Jim Bailey gave his opinion on pumps you did this too. No-one's trying to stop your great work.
