Meh....it's just a 430. I've seen many of them parked outside of Starbucks.

No offense there sty3x, but the odds are REALLY against you on this one... Without GREAT CARE from your right foot and your parking choices it might not even last that long... I hope it does though. I would rather that I eat those words in three years time and have you here in Austin as an active member of the local PCA!

Congrats on the scholarship btw...that is a good thing! A VERY GOOD THING! What is your planned major?
Hey James,

although your observations are correct for the majority, I don't think it applies to this kid.
I met Joe and his family a while back and he impressed me as being a very serious and level headed young man.

He seems to be genuinely afflicted by the same sickness most of us on this board are

Paul, Ryan, Joe, et. al. I hope you are right... I have seen bad things happen to good kids and good cars.

There is just an issue with car control and maturity that happens with.... well, AGE and experience. I know that if I were cut loose w/ a 928 as a 20 year old I never would have seen 25! When I was that age I was all out all the time!! While I was far more accomplished a driver than ANY of my friends I still would have wrapped a 928 up pretty bad I am sure...

Incidentally I too was a brilliant young man with all kinds of scholarships (Southwestern Univ in G'town, Biology and Chemistry double major...went on to a PhD program in Genetics at A&M, but got out before I got to far into that) and an Eagle Scout to boot, but I had (and still have) a BAD adrenaline habit that I just can't break and what thrills me is to slide a car around a corner...or be right on the edge of that...ALL THE TIME!

If I had 320HP under my right foot (I wasn't ALWAYS paralyzed) instead of 69HP, I would have been in BIG TROUBLE!

Joe, hope it works out for you! We will be more than happy to have you join in the PCA stuff up in Austin when you get settled up here...it is a GREAT group of folks. If you are 18 you could even participate in DE events out at TWS or if we get some more opportunities to do them at H2R in San Marcos. If we had those when I was your age it would have been a big help for me and that monkey on my back! LOL!

Hey James I appreciate your comments a lot I have much respect for you I really do like your collection of 928s. I think most of us here have that bad adrenaline habit though, James. I'm not going to lie and say that I'm mature and responsible, because I'm not. My thinking like I said is this I have very beautiful car (in my eyes at least) I don't want to destroy it or harm myself or anyone with reckless driving that’s horrible how could I live with myself knowing I put other peoples’ lives in danger? Like I said this isn't a brand-new Porsche and this more thinking with my wallet than my head, but the truth is every time I would want to race it, burn out or w/e it’s more than likely something will break it beats up both my car and my wallet. If you guys think that wasting money on GTS brakes is a waste imagine what a waste it would be for wasting money on literally stupid things like burning out or drifting whatever its an incredibly stupid waste of money.

I think one of the greatest factors for me caring the car so much is that I bought it with my hard earned money it wasn't bought for me I have always liked Porsches since my dad had a 996TT back when we lived in Houston it was an amazing car. At first I wanted a 996 C2, but I finally decided on a 928, because I loved it since Scarface, Weird Science and other movies it came out. I also loved the history behind it and the technology that went into producing this car I knew i needed to have a S4 especially in red because I wanted it to look like the car that broke the world record back in 1986. I started working right after I turned 16 at a carwash detailing place here in McAllen and then later on at Whataburger (for you non-texas guys you have no idea what your missing) after that I started working with a friends payroll company doing technical work and I got acquainted with some of their clients and I got my certifications, soon I started working in fixing computers and helping my clients with their hardware/software. It was only then that I got enough money to be able to buy my 928.

I know this is long, but I kind of wanted to let you guys know why this car won't end up in the parts bin. I truly believe I worked hard for it and there is no part of me that would want to hurt this car. I understand most people my age crash and its true ,but I've noticed something my friends with the more higher end cars Z4s, Boxsters and stuff like that they have all crashed and completely totaled their cars, but my friends that restore their cars and work on them every weekend they don't even have a ding on the door. I worked for it no one gave it to me and I'm glad it was this way cause I can fully appreciate the awesome machine the 928 really is. Sorry again for length of my post.

P.S

Oh yeah, btw the 430 in that picture the owner is a Doctor here in McAllen he owns the club where my cousins band plays. I believe he has a black gallardo as well. He is not my age lol

This thread is way . What needs restoration on your car? As an '87, it'll need something done to it before brakes.

Start with the timing belt for the comfort factor, then get it dyno'd and start figuring out why its making less power than it did when it left the factory

That'll give you other stuff to fix, and before you know it you'll be down about 5k in parts, but have a much smoother, nicely running S4 that'll be reliable (and faster).

My own experience is that if your car is still original, pretty much every bit of rubber in the engine bay is hard and cracked, and broken sensors and leaky vacuum lines will put you way down on power, while crispy fuel lines and old PS hoses put you at risk of combustion (carry a 4/5lb fire extinguisher).

Learning to do it all yourself is time consuming, but rewarding! You can drive it in between each job so you remember why you like the car

Just be careful around Campus, not sure how often you've driven in Austin around UT. It's not that 928 friendly. Plus, I imagine all the hippies that congregate around there wouldn't take to kindly to your car. I figure the "Green" population of Austin has grown exponentially since I left for the Army. I'd watch it like a hawk downtown.

Instead of just telling you to not buy GTS brakes. I'll give you my idea of what you should do. I'd buy Drop-Links for the front and rear, more for the front. I'd get a more aggressive street pad for your current brakes. X-pipe and RMB. TB/WP of course, and fresh fluids everywhere. That should make a nice little starting point.

You just made me miss home even more. That and Freebirds, man I need some Austin food. That's just the tip of the iceberg too!

Don't forget the calipers only have a clear coat on them. They are black anodized aluminum, so if you use a chemical stripper you can just re-clear them.
Agreed on saving as much $$ for maintenance as possible. There is plenty of drama just keeping these cars road worthy.

Joe,

Well done! You have allayed my concerns! I too LOVE the 996TT's! Freaking AWESOME CARS! Jon B and I spent some time in a 996TT that a friend let me borrow for a long weekend! That car rocked! There were times when I would have rather been in my '92 GTS, but I can tell you that the TT's are WICKED FAST! Though some of our S/Ced cars here on the list are putting down some REALLY BIG numbers!

Jon B is right about the UT campus area...your car will NOT be appreciated down there so just be careful where you park it. Be sure and stay tuned here and we will get you to some of our functions.

Resto stuff... Hmmmm... A SERIOUSLY good carpet cleaning and deep paint cleaning and wax job should be top of the list. Unlike Jon B I would say forget about the front bar stuff (these cars understeer to much already and while that does take some of the roll out of the front it makes the understeer worse), rear drop links FOR SURE... X-pipe and RMB would be good if its an '87, just the X-pipe or just the RMB if it is an '88 (they have different resonators and the '88's can get loud)...

Looking forward to a close look at your car Joe!

Best,

Never done a TB/WP myself... Don't have the mobility to get in there and do it all. Jon B did one on his old '85 and can give a few tips...he was about your age when he did it w/ a friend who had a lot of experience doing them.

Other here can give good info. I just had one done on my S4, but the shop decided NOT do to the WP because he has seen way to many times where a good pump was removed just to have the new one installed and start leaking immediately and then you have to go in and do it all over once more. I understand the concern of NOT doing the WP and having a failure too. There is no right or wrong answer here...

The belts MUST be done though... That said, with my cars in a climate controlled garage I did not worry about it to much and went 11 YEARS on my last TB on my '88 S4! Got the belt ten warning light the other day and quite driving it till I could get it in the shop. All is well now...well, except they got something not quite right on the stereo when putting it back in (some a/c service required its removal) so now I get engine noise through the speakers...not terrible, but certainly not Hi-Fi anymore!

Joe, when are you going to be moving to Austin and where are you going to be living?

I'll have my mechanic do it He is a great guy who owns his shop and works only on Porsches though I have seen a Maserati Merak there and I think some other exotics. He only charged me $450 for all the labor which I think was very cheap.

I don't think I will live on campus my dad might start working again in Austin. He is an architect ,and he fell ill he has diabetes and now has to go dyalisis three times a week so he can't no longer work. Some of his friends are putting together a firm though and invited him to come along in Austin so I might live with them to cut costs cause my scholarship doesn't cover room and board just tuition. Weird huh?

I always liked Austin I was actually born in San Antonio ,but Austin has a much better environment IMHO
its very nice city with lots to do and history my kind of place. It also helps it has a very nice Porsche dealership

sty3x,

I recommend you install one of the Porkensioners and borrow or buy one of Porken's 32V'ers to check and set the advance on your cams when you have your TB/WP job done. If I had my TB/WP job to do over again, these would be 2 items I would have definitely done. Because: the stock tensioner is a PIA to rebuild and ADJUST and having the correct advance set on the cams can help return some power to your engine.

Don't sweat the age verus car deal, I bought a '67 Mustang Convertible 289ci 3-spd when I turned 18 and still have it today, 20 years later. It now sports a 302ci and 4-spd and will freakin' fly as always. Just be responsible when you drive and don't let friends talk you into doing stupid things.

Oh, and if you are done using that happy non-camera hand, post some more pics of your car.
