Apparently just the threat is sufficient.

It all depends on circumstance. Typically anything over 100mph is an automatic reckless driving charge and a trip to jail. However,I am someone who a few years ago, on an early, early Sunday morning took a 92 500E Benz up past 140mph on the 405 freeway. The CHP officer who followed me to a stop gave me a ticket for 95mph because, and I quote, "maybe I was catching you, maybe I wasn't", and sent me on my way. Turns out he'd been trying to catch me for 8 miles or so and when I did glimpse him in the rear view mirror he was so far back that I was windows down, engine off, keys on the dash, hands on the wheel and so far pulled over for his safety it was ridiculous. I should add that in my experience when you're doing something that stupid you should ask the officer a question. That question should be, "Do you want the keys". His answer will let you know whether you're going to jail or not.

In court the ticket cost me $350 or so and 2 points. On my driving record it simply said, "Excessive speed".

In the 928 I've never been busted at any ridiculous speeds. 80mph in Texas and about the same in Arizona once each.

Say I was noodling along at 85mph and decided to floor it for a third gear drop, held it wide open to the 130mph-something 3-4 shift, and kept my foot on for another minute or so. It doesn't take long to be looking at speeds like that.

Would it be a go-to-jail-directly scenario and a car impound? Or would you just get a ticket and be sent on your way?

I know it's a state law issue, and so responses will vary, but as I said, I'm just curious. I don't drive like that.

Bottom line ...
Rolling ... at arm-lock, no radio, FOCUS speed on a public road should not be done on a lark.
When doing 30 second miles (+) you don't want to be thinking about when you last checked the tire pressure.
Since you are essentially a 4 wheeled asphalt missle you shouldn't be wondering about wether a Trooper got laid yesterday, a fellow Trooper recently died after being run over during a common traffic stop or, if he appreciates the Porsche Marque.
Be prepared for the worst possible outcome and appreciate any slack a persuit officer gives you.
BTW
If I were to air out the Wunder-Weissach say 3/4 times a year I would do a thorough pre-flight to include ride heigth, Tire press., tire condition -360, inner and outside sidewalls too-, fluids, and suspension, driveline bits. I would also pre-check a limited access 2 laner with full lane shoulders in good condition. Be aware of sun position throughout the course and time of day - school/work
route-, and time of routine Trooper and County Mounty patrols. There is, also, a difference between a planned run and a chance heads-up run , avoid a race.
Wild hair up your butt/let's see what this baby will do kind of racing will eventually end in a tragedy...large or small.
That said. Have fun.

Years ago my buddy wound up losing his license in California for a year thanks to his 928. (He got his dental practice partner to drive the car for the next year for him). I got most of the "need for speed" out of my system on der Autobahn a couple years ago. Touched about 180 mph (top up) but was fairly busy looking AHEAD and down the road instead of fixating on the gauges. I gotta add,--the fuel level was moving about as fast as the odometer!

My kid just finished drivers ed and tells me that here in Orygun 150 is considered a felony and would result in handcuffs and tow trucks. His first car will be a 79 Euro and I'm not sure that'll make it 150. My 740 however is good to 155 before the limiter chokes it out. Let's see...... new tires and a complete chassis inspection.........2:00AM I-5 MP.........wait a minute that's too much info. Nah I'd never do anything like that.

My insurance agent told me that my insurance company does not check drivers records, unless there is a change to the policy, or a claim.

If you even stop at a speed like that in my area they give you a break as long as no other cops or the chopper is called.
A few months ago I was on a side road that no one uses and I just stepped into it. He said do I know how fast I was going? I said maybe 40. He said I was clocked at 75 and gaining in a 30. I said sorry officer I get a short lunch break (local Oreilly parts store). He said dont be stupid like that and drove off. I was still in uniform and had sold him parts 20 min before that. That would have cost a lot of cash! Nice guy.

I'm pretty sure, at 150, you would get cuffed and stuffed! I was clocked at 108 in a 65 on the PA turnpike. I thought for sure I was going to jail, be he just gave me a ticket.

In Oregon the rule is now at 100 mph they will take the car,--impound it, and you can only imagine what they will do to the driver.

A few years back, heading out to Wichita for the 928OCIC a couple of us were on I84 heading eastbound (near Ontario, OR) at a rather high rate of speed. I was riding shotgun. This particular stretch of road is nice long straight with slight hills. I'm not gonna say who was driving (he can own up if he wants to), but his words to me as he saw the lights come on way back in the distance, was ...you can drive my car to the event, and pick me up on your way back through town ..or something to that effect . Seems the Oregon State Trooper was sitting way back in the brush on an on-ramp. Said he nailed us as we crested the second or third hill on the road and it took a while for him to catch us. He clocked the car I was in at 140 and the other car at 125. He didn't cuff and stuff the drivers and said..while I understand your cars are meant for these speeds..please keep it down to the posted limit. I think the respective fee's for these were on the order of $425 and $225.

Apparently this area is a well known speed trap and the only hit our cars got that there was anything out there was a small burst of X band... (he said he used Laser).

On our way back through town after the OCIC we were watching for him and sure enough he was on the other side of the road...a few minutes later..he's back behind us....but no probs....as we were exactly at the posted limit

I have AMICA and they don't review driving records once your policy is issued. They may have the last time I moved interstate, but since no tickets were in my home state, they didn't see any of them. And they are happy to pay claims, too. The best insurance company I've ever heard of, and I'll never leave them!
