the pads may be dirty or corroded in the calipers, the calipers may have loose securing bolts, the rotors may be rusty on the edges, the E brake shoes may not be correctly adjusted

Does it only happen on first application, or all the time. Mine does something similar, on first application. It's not really audible, I mainly feel it through the pedal, I believe its ABS related, other's have reported the same.

Quick search reveals no big magic knowledge on adjusting or checking the e-brake shoes. Is the WSM procedure enough or are there tricks to make things 'easy'?

If your going to go to the trouble to remove the rear rotors to inspect the e brake its best to remove both of the shoes and grease the backing plate and add some grease to the adjuster after you clean it. Be careful with the spring holders they sometimes wont catch on the raised boss and will pop off inside the rotor and then you will have to do a repeat. Adjust the shoes and then adjust the E brake handle , adjuster for handle is under the cover that surrounds the handle about 4 screws, you should have about 4 clicks till its tight
